FromSoftware’s Parent Company Kadokawa has Confirmed Sony’s Intent to Acquire The Company

As a long-time fan of FromSoftware games, this news has me both excited and a bit apprehensive. On one hand, the prospect of Sony, a titan in the gaming industry, acquiring FromSoftware could mean more resources for creating even more masterpieces like Elden Ring and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. On the other hand, I’ve seen what happens when big corporations absorb smaller, independent studios. The fear of losing the unique charm and challenge that FromSoftware games bring to the table is real.

According to recent news, Sony has shown an interest in purchasing FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa, which Kadokawa has now officially confirmed.

The news arrives after widespread news outlets, initially sparked by Reuters, reported that negotiations between the firms had been taking place continuously.

Although some reports suggest that Sony Group Inc. is acquiring KADOKAWA Corporation (referred to as ‘the Company’ hereafter), it’s important to note that this information hasn’t been officially confirmed by the Company itself. The Company has received a preliminary offer to purchase its shares, but no final decision has been made yet. If any new details emerge in the future, we will promptly and appropriately share them with you.

Currently, Kadokawa Corporation holds about 70% ownership in FromSoftware, while Sony owns approximately 14%. Essentially, Sony has a 2% stake in Kadokawa Corporation, but other major gaming companies, such as Tencent, also have shares in the company.

The exact progress of the negotiations isn’t evident right now. If the bid for acquisition turns out to be fruitful, an announcement might not be forthcoming immediately.
