The game “Frosthaven” is set to receive a video game version, as announced by the publisher, Arc Games. PC gaming enthusiasts can expect to participate in its closed beta testing from late March 2025 onwards.
Created by Jason D. Kingsley, the board game “Frosthaven” has become highly sought-after, amassing almost $13 million through Kickstarter in the year 2020, marking it as the largest tabletop crowdfunding project on that platform to date. It’s a self-contained follow-up to “Gloomhaven”, a cooperative tabletop game for up to four players designed by Isaac Childres. Notably, Childres also led the development of the sequel. Shipping of “Frosthaven” to Kickstarter supporters started in 2022.
The upcoming video game adaptation of “Frosthaven” was officially announced at the Future Games Show: Spring Showcase on March 20th. During the event, a minute-long trailer showcasing gameplay footage was released, confirming that the digital version of “Frosthaven” will be a turn-based tactical RPG. Similar to its tabletop counterpart, the video game version of “Frosthaven” will allow between one and four players to participate.
Frosthaven’s Development Is Led by X-COM Creator
The development of the video game version of “Frosthaven” is currently underway at Snapshot Games, a studio founded and led by Julian Gollop, creator of “X-COM.” Established in 2013, Snapshot was an independent company until it was acquired by Saber Interactive, a subsidiary of Embracer Group, in 2020. Although most of Saber was sold to Beacon Interactive in March 2024 for $247 million, Snapshot wasn’t involved in this deal. To date, the studio has produced two titles, with their latest being the strategy game “Phoenix Point,” released in 2019 and later ported to PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia in 2021. It appears that Snapshot began working on “Frosthaven” shortly after this.
Frosthaven Will Feature New Classes, Outpost Management, and More
In the digital adaptation of Frosthaven, players will encounter fresh character classes, which necessitates strategic planning for team configurations and interplay to optimize scarce resources effectively. Additionally, outpost management is integral to gameplay, as specific aspects and mechanisms are hidden behind certain buildings and enhancements. The multiplayer mode of Frosthaven allows for collaboration between two to four players online.
Frosthaven Closed Beta Is Starting Soon
As an eager fan, I can’t contain my excitement as Frosthaven, the upcoming tactical RPG, is aiming for a 2025 release on PC! While it’s still up in the air whether this captivating game will eventually grace consoles, let’s focus on what we know: the game is set to debut as part of Steam Early Access first. Before that grand moment arrives, Snapshot has planned a closed beta test, which is all set to commence at 9am PT on March 27 and run until April 24. To get a chance to participate in this exclusive test with limited spots, head over to the game’s official website for more details. The playtest will offer six starting character classes, 20 engaging quests, and some intriguing outpost building mechanics.
