Frostpunk 2: The Lore of Winterhome Explained

As a gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can honestly say that Frostpunk’s lore has left a lasting impact on me. The tragic tale of Winterhome is one that resonates deeply, striking a chord in the heart of every player who experiences it.

In the current state, the mythology within the Frostpunk series remains relatively sparse, considering its six-year existence. Nevertheless, the lore that does exist in Frostpunk and its newly launched successor can be quite intense and evocative. This game series is set in a post-apocalyptic landscape ravaged by an unprecedented frost, which explains why its narrative primarily focuses on heartrending events.

In the game called Frostpunk, players assume command over a city known as New London, believed to be the last refuge of human survivors. However, it’s important to note that other settlements did once exist. One such settlement was Winterhome, and its tale is among the saddest parts of Frostpunk’s history.

The Lore of Frostpunk 2’s Winterhome Explained

Winterhome Was One of The British Empire’s First Settlements

1886 saw an unprecedented global blizzard of catastrophic proportions. This storm, known as “The Great Frost,” enshrouded the world in a biting cold that lasted unyieldingly. The British Empire sprang into action, diverting all its assets and wealth to expedite the construction of Heat Radiator Towers and amphibious War Vessels, aimed at safeguarding its populace.

These Land Dreadnoughts served as transportation for a chosen group, taking them to outposts stocked with resources and structures designed to combat the worsening cold conditions. One of the earliest of these outposts, Winterhome, served as the base for the British Empire’s research and exploration team. By the time London succumbed to inadequate infrastructure and widespread panic, Winterhome had become a fully operational city, boasting cutting-edge technologies like Automatons.

The Fall of Winterhome

Despite boasting advanced technology and prosperity, Winterhome faced an unresolvable problem at its core. At the very center of every settlement stands a towering Heat Generator Tower, supplying warmth and power to the entire city. Without this generator, the outpost would endure for merely a few weeks. However, Winterhome’s generator harbored a severe defect.

The initial failure of Winterhome’s power plant caused widespread fear among its residents. To quell the ensuing turmoil, the Captain of Winterhome imposed a strict, authoritarian rule, using force to maintain order. However, when the generator failed again, the people decided they had had enough and rose up against the Captain, sparking a full-blown civil war.

The insurgents orchestrated a victorious uprising, resulting in the execution of Winterhome’s captain together with other high-ranking officers. A new leader was appointed by the rebels to oversee Winterhome, and remarkably, they restored the city from its ruins and reshaped a significant portion of its society. However, once London succumbed and refugees began arriving, Winterhome’s destiny was set. Tumultuous protests ignited due to food scarcity, and in the turmoil, Winterhome’s defective generator detonated.

Those who managed to survive the initial explosion of the generator were either lost in the ensuing chaos and violence, or they had to brave the harsh Frostlands. Only a handful of Winterhome’s inhabitants endured this calamity, and miraculously, they were saved by scouts dispatched from New London.

In the “Last Autumn” scenario of the game Frostpunk, it strongly suggests that the characters controlled by the player, while gathering resources, secretly take components intended for repairing Winterhome’s power generator. Consequently, this act leads to Winterhome’s demise.

Winterhome’s Second Chance

In the original game, Frostpunk, players discover Winterhome, essentially a deserted, frozen town offering minimal benefits to New London and its inhabitants. However, in Frostpunk 2, Winterhome transforms into a valuable piece of land, where players can utilize its remnants as the base for constructing a brand new city.
