11 Bit Studios developer announced that the game Frostpunk is undergoing a remake using Unreal Engine 5, with a slight adjustment to its name as well. This city-building survival simulator captured gamers’ interest when it debuted in 2018 due to its engaging atmosphere, tough mechanics, and user-friendly interface. It garnered an 86 average critic rating on OpenCritic, and seven years after its release, Frostpunk continues to have a “Very Positive” user rating on Steam.
The original game was extremely popular, leading to a sequel being produced some years down the line. This follow-up outperformed its precursor in terms of simultaneous players when it debuted and now holds a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam. Upon their initial releases, both games were updated frequently; the first one eventually had three paid expansion packs, while the roadmap for Frostpunk 2 indicates that there will be three DLCs released up until 2026.
Currently, 11 Bit Studios has unveiled a revamped version of their original game, titled “Frostpunk: 1886”. This updated edition offers a deeper look into the events that transpired when the Great Storm initially hit New London. Using Unreal Engine 5, as 11 Bit’s Liquid Engine is no longer under development, this reimagining will be brought to life. The president of 11 Bit Studios, Przemysław Marszał, had previously hinted at such a game in mid-April. Expected release date for Frostpunk: 1886 is set for the year 2027.
The Original Frostpunk Recreated in Unreal Engine 5
In simpler terms, “Frostpunk 1886” is not just an updated version of the original game in terms of visuals. It’s going to offer new features such as fresh mechanics, laws, and gameplay elements, along with a new Purpose Path. The upcoming release will also include mod support, something the community has been asking for quite some time now. Plus, there might be extra DLC content hinted by the developers.
11 Bit Studios has shared some exciting news during their interview with Polish Press Agency. Not only are they working on a larger game, scheduled for release in 2029, but the nature of this project remains undecided – it could be another installment of Frostpunk or an entirely new intellectual property. On a more immediate note, their upcoming sci-fi game Alters is set to launch in June and will be accessible to Xbox Game Pass subscribers from day one. Furthermore, 11 Bit Studios also functions as a publisher for Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault, which is planned for a Summer 2025 release.
2024 wasn’t a smooth year for the company either. In December, they announced layoffs and the cancellation of Project 8, an unannounced narrative-driven console game. The reason given was changing market trends, though the underperformance of Frostpunk 2 upon its September release might have also played a role. Despite positive reviews from gamers and critics for Frostpunk 2, it didn’t sell as well as anticipated, and its player base didn’t grow as expected. Fingers crossed that the releases of Alters and Frostpunk 1886 will help the company financially recover.
