As a fan, I’ve noticed that Microsoft’s proposed $68.7 billion takeover of Activision Blizzard King encountered minimal resistance in areas like Australia, the Middle East, and Europe. However, things took a different turn in the US. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) took a firm stance against the acquisition and filed an injunction to block the deal back in June 2023. Although the FTC ultimately failed in its attempt, the antitrust authority has been vocal about Microsoft’s decisions regarding Activision Blizzard’s integration into their business.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed some disappointing changes to Xbox Game Pass lately. The FTC points out in its filing that the harm to consumers from the merger, which the antitrust agency aimed to prevent, is now occurring with the recent changes to Game Pass. These modifications represent a firm wielding market power following the merger. The FTC also calls attention to Microsoft’s conflicting statements regarding Game Pass price increases in relation to the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. While Microsoft stated that prices wouldn’t rise “because of” the deal, it did not specify whether other factors could lead to an increase.
