While the power levels in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood might not be as high as in popular anime like Naruto or My Hero Academia, the villains are still genuinely frightening. They’re cleverly designed to maximize the impact of their abilities, and the antagonists – primarily the homunculi – are well-developed characters who effectively terrorize people throughout the country of Amestris.
Considering that villains in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood frequently battle regular soldiers or basic alchemists, it’s clear they don’t need much to cause widespread destruction – a single powerful weapon and a Philosopher’s Stone are often enough. They also cleverly use tactics like ambushes and choose their battles carefully, making them appear even more formidable and furthering Father’s goals.
Gluttony is More Useful For His Strong Senses
Gluttony Ended Up in Pride’s Stomach
Gluttony, one of the strongest villains in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, is surprisingly the weakest due to his awkward and unrefined fighting. While he has a unique ability – a false Portal of Truth in his chest that once trapped Ed, Ling, and Envy – it isn’t enough for him to stand toe-to-toe with the series’ most powerful antagonists.
Gluttony actually died twice in the anime. The first time, his Philosopher’s Stone was used up. The second time, Pride ate him to gain his incredible sense of smell – which was Gluttony’s main strength. While useful, this ability wasn’t enough to make Gluttony a truly powerful opponent.
Lust Blends the Ultimate Spear With Seduction to Support Father
Lust Couldn’t Handle Roy’s Flames
Lust is a skilled anime assassin who relies on accuracy and stealth in battle, setting her apart from more forceful fighters like Gluttony and Sloth. However, she doesn’t have a huge range of abilities, and can be beaten if opponents, such as Colonel Roy Mustang, figure out how to counter her attacks. If her usual strategies fail, she’s at a significant disadvantage.
Lust is a capable leader, but her greatest strengths are her ability to seduce others and her deadly Ultimate Spear. She uses seduction to manipulate people, especially men, into trusting her and revealing secrets. The Ultimate Spear is her primary weapon, allowing her to extend her fingers into incredibly sharp, piercing blades that can penetrate any material.
Sloth Boasted Incredible Speed But Rarely Used It
Sloth’s Direct Attacks Were Often Easy to Counter
Similar to his ‘brother’ Gluttony, Sloth is a clumsy but powerful fighter who often reveals his intentions. However, Sloth is actually a more capable combatant, thanks to his superior ability. He can move with incredible speed when he needs to, as demonstrated during the battle at the Promised Day.

I’ve always found Sloth fascinating! He might not have the same furious energy as Wrath, but honestly, he’s way more focused and courageous when it comes to fighting than Gluttony is. Even though he really doesn’t want to put in effort, Sloth can be surprisingly ruthless and doesn’t mess around or get scared like Gluttony does. The thing is, he’s not exactly sneaky or strategic. Smart opponents can figure him out and exploit that, which is a shame, but it makes things interesting!
Envy Gets the Jump on His Enemies With Shapeshifting
His Giant Form is Just a Giant Target, However
Envy is a powerful villain in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood who fights for Father using both cunning strategies and incredible strength. Similar to Lust, Envy frequently deceives people to gather information or make them vulnerable, but is even more skilled at it. Because Envy can change shape, they can fool anyone, not just those who are easily charmed.
Envy’s ability to change shape makes him dangerous for disrupting enemies, gathering secrets, and even manipulating people’s minds – he famously broke Maes Hughes mentally by appearing as two different people. In a fight, Envy can be a decent opponent using his various animal and blade-like forms, or his massive lizard shape. However, powerful fighters like Roy Mustang don’t see his larger forms as a threat, but rather as a bigger target.
Greed Outlasts His Enemies With the Ultimate Shield
Greed Can Also Run and Jump Pretty Far
Greed first appeared in the sewers of Dublith, wielding the Ultimate Shield – a powerful item that complements the Ultimate Spear and Ultimate Eye. His unique ability allows him to reinforce his skin with carbon, making it incredibly durable. This serves as both a strong defense against attacks and a devastating offense, as he can slash through enemies with claws as hard as diamonds.
Greed is a formidable fighter, capable of going toe-to-toe with powerful alchemists like Edward Elric and Izumi Curtis, especially with the protection of his full-body Ultimate Shield. He’s also incredibly agile and fast, demonstrated by his impressive movements during the events of the Promised Day after becoming a sort of hero while possessing Ling Yao’s body.
Solf J. Kimblee Can Level Entire City Blocks With His Alchemy
Up Close, Kimblee is More Vulnerable
Solf J. Kimblee was a terrifying opponent in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, using stolen and acquired Philosopher’s Stones to become incredibly dangerous to everyone he fought. His mastery of explosion alchemy made him one of the most destructive and cruel state alchemists during the Ishval Civil War.
Kimblee is a master manipulator who skillfully took advantage of Edward Elric’s kindness in the northern mining town. He’s incredibly clever and a talented tracker, making it nearly impossible to escape or deceive him. Stopping him requires exceptional effort, and one potential strategy is to engage him in close-quarters combat, where he’s not as strong.
Scar Used Deconstruction Alchemy to Massacre His Amestrian Foes
Scar Later Put His Talents to Work Against Wrath
I’ve been watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and it’s interesting how Scar, the Ishvalan avenger, wasn’t always portrayed as a bad guy. Still, he definitely became a major threat – one of the most dangerous villains in the series. What really stood out to me was his physical strength; he’s incredibly powerful, whether you compare him to humans or even the homunculi, and a seriously skilled fighter.
Scar’s right arm is covered in tattoos created by his brother, an alchemist, which give him the power to destroy almost anything he touches at close range – whether it’s living tissue, pavement, or walls. This destructive ability, combined with his skill in close combat, makes him a formidable opponent. When cornered, he can even rip up the ground to create a smokescreen and escape. This deadly combination allowed him to defeat numerous state alchemists before he was finally captured.
Wrath Dominates the Battlefield With Deadly Blade Strikes
The Ultimate Eye Ensures Wrath Never Misses His Target
Wrath is a highly skilled swordsman in the anime, known for his deadly fighting style, the power of his Ultimate Eye, and years of combat experience. He usually leads the Amestris military as King Bradley, but when he personally enters a fight, destruction follows. Even without his special eye, he’s a formidable opponent with his swords, and with it, he’s nearly unstoppable.
Wrath is an incredibly effective fighter, able to defeat any opponent thanks to his cold, calculated approach and brutal fighting style. He’s even overcome powerful defenses like Greed’s Ultimate Shield and rapid healing. Interestingly, while most homunculi can quickly recover from injuries, Wrath’s own Philosopher’s Stone isn’t strong enough to do so, making him physically vulnerable. However, this weakness is largely irrelevant because enemies struggle to even hit him.
Pride Combines the Talents of His Six Siblings in One Package
Pride Could Only Be Destroyed From the Inside
Pride is considered the oldest and most formidable of Father’s creations, essentially combining the strengths of six homunculi into one being. He’s easily recognized by his shadowy form covered in eyes and mouths, but his abilities are a blend of the others: he possesses Sloth’s sluggishness, Greed’s resilience, and Lust’s sharp attacks, to name a few.
As a huge Fullmetal Alchemist fan, I always found Pride’s existence so fascinating and frustrating! It’s crazy how you just couldn’t destroy him with brute force – Ed and his allies really struggled with that. Even someone as powerful as Van Hohenheim could only hold him back, not actually eliminate him. Ultimately, it took Ed doing something unbelievably risky – turning himself into a Philosopher’s Stone – to finally confront Pride’s soul directly and win the fight. It was such a clever and intense solution!
Father Nearly Destroyed All of Amestris as a Prospective God
Humanity United Against Father to Take Him Down
Father is arguably the most terrifying and crucial villain in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. He’s evolved significantly from his origins as a small homunculus in Xerxes, now appearing as a powerful, human-like being resembling Hohenheim. His alchemical abilities are immense; he can manipulate vast quantities of matter effortlessly and even create something from nothing.
Honestly, the sheer scale of Father’s Philosopher’s Stone blew my mind – it was powered by around 500,000 souls! And when he reached his prime on the Promised Day? He was practically invincible. This younger version of himself could literally make suns and just shrug off entire armies with his barriers. It took a relentless, all-out assault, plus Greed’s sneaky interference, to finally bring him down, and even then, it was a ridiculously close call.
