Fun is Officially Over in Pokemon Legends: Z-A Comp When January 29 Comes

So, it looks like Pokemon Legends: Z-A isn’t getting any big content updates after the Mega Dimension DLC – just new rewards, item codes, and ranked seasons. But honestly, those seasons can really shake things up, especially with how the competitive scene is evolving. Season 6 starts on January 29th, and everyone’s saying it’s going to be brutal! They’ve added some seriously powerful Legendary Pokemon that are completely changing the game, so everything I knew about ranked battles? Probably going out the window. It’s going to be a wild ride!

Let’s quickly recap the current state of the game before discussing how limiting certain Legendary Pokémon will change things. Right now, the strongest Pokémon are those that can attack quickly and powerfully, like the Swords of Justice, Volcanion, and Magearna. With Mega Evolutions from Pokémon Legends: Z-A still being important, the game emphasizes strong attackers, but players can still defend against them and find ways to counter those powerful moves.

  • Volcanion brings both bulk and offensive power, often running Fire and Water moves to hit a wide variety of foes hard. It’s a tough Pokemon to break, especially with its Fire/Water typing.
  • Magearna has been a favorite pick due to its high Special Attack and wide movepool, which allows it to serve as both an offensive and support asset on teams. It also gained a new Mega Evolution in the game.
  • Armarouge has similarly found its place thanks to its Fire/Psychic typing and ability to hit hard while using items like Expert Belt, Life Orb, and Assault Vest paired with powerful moves like Armor Cannon, Psychic, and Meteor Beam.
  • Swampert has been an all-around solid pick in terms of both offense and utility, thanks to its access to Earthquake, Waterfall, and Stealth Rock. It’s a reliable choice for many teams.
  • The Swords of Justice have been staples for their high stats, offensive versatility, and the ability to hit hard with moves like Close Combat and Sacred Sword.
  • Baxcalibur is a great answer to many threats in the meta, and once powered up with Swords Dance, it can deal massive damage even against targets who don’t take super-effective damage from it.
  • Garchomp is Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s most OP Pokemon at the moment, and that’s because it packs incredible stats, a very strong Mega Evolution, and it can be used with lots of different items to improve its damage or survivability.

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, and Keldeo can significantly increase their Attack and Special Attack stats just by using the move Sacred Sword. This makes them powerful additions to any team, and unlike many other Pokemon, they don’t need to use moves like Swords Dance to become strong.

The current competitive scene has been defined by powerful attackers, but upcoming rules limiting Legendary Pokémon will change the game’s focus. Instead of simply trying to keep things balanced, players will need to deal with exceptionally strong Pokémon. While each team can only include one of these restricted Pokémon, they will still create balance challenges. The restricted Pokémon are:

  • Xerneas
  • Yveltal
  • Zygarde
  • Mewtwo
  • Groudon
  • Kyogre
  • Rayquaza

Restricted Legendaries in Pokemon Legends: Z-A Are Officially Ruining The Game

Why Xerneas is OP in PLZA Ranked Battles

Xerneas is a strong Fairy-type Pokémon that can learn powerful moves like Moonblast and Geomancy. Even without the Fairy Aura ability in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it remains a significant offensive threat. Geomancy sharply increases Xerneas’s Special Attack and speed, letting it quickly defeat entire teams if given the chance. Its Fairy-type attacks are particularly effective against common offensive Pokémon like the Swords of Justice, as well as Dragon- and Fighting-types such as Garchomp and Baxcalibur.

Because the competitive Pokémon scene currently favors strong attackers, Xerneas in Pokémon Legends: Z-A will likely change how teams are built. Players will probably start using more Steel- and Poison-type Pokémon to defend against Xerneas’s powerful attacks, or Pokémon with priority moves to quickly defeat it. Xerneas is versatile, though, with access to moves like Thunderbolt and new moves introduced in the Pokémon Legends: Z-A DLC.

How Mewtwo Could Reshape PLZA’s Ranked Battles

Mewtwo is a hugely popular Pokémon known for its incredible attacking strength – it has a base Special Attack of 120 and can learn a wide variety of powerful moves like Psystrike, Shadow Ball, and Calm Mind. Because Mega Mewtwo Y was so dominant in Season 3 of PLZA, many players expect Mewtwo to be a top competitor again in Season 6.

Why You Shouldn’t Sleep on Zygarde in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

In the sixth season, Zygarde is expected to be a powerful and reliable Pokémon on defense, capable of withstanding attacks from strong opponents like Xerneas and Mewtwo. Although it doesn’t have unique abilities like some other legendaries, its high stats and diverse moveset allow it to excel both as a durable wall and a strong attacker, fitting well into many team strategies. Once it transforms into its Mega form, Mega Zygarde can quickly defeat opponents thanks to its incredibly high Special Attack stat of 216 and powerful moves.

How Groudon and Kyogre Can Wipe Out The Competition in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Groudon retains its status as a top offensive threat, inheriting abilities from Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Its diverse move set, including Precipice Blades, Fire Punch, and Stone Edge, gives it great coverage against many opponents, ensuring it remains a powerful physical attacker. Groudon’s Ground- and Fire-type moves are especially effective against Fire-, Steel-, and Rock-type Pokemon, and players will also have access to its Primal form.

As a long-time fan, I can tell you Kyogre is still a powerhouse even without its Primordial Sea ability! It’s just a consistently strong special attacker. With moves like Origin Pulse, Ice Beam, and Thunder, it can hit almost anything for serious damage, making it great against both aggressive and defensive teams. I see Kyogre as a bulky Water-type attacker that uses its incredible Special Attack to break through tough opponents and really put the hurt on Fire-types like Groudon. Honestly, Primal Kyogre is going to stay one of the best Pokémon on almost any team – there are very few Pokémon that can reliably handle it!

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Rayquaza is About to Break The Game

Even without its usual abilities, Rayquaza is incredibly fast and can hit many different types of Pokémon effectively. Moves like Dragon Ascent and Extreme Speed make it a major threat to opponents that aren’t faster or don’t have priority moves. Its combination of Flying and Dragon attacks will be powerful in the current competitive scene, as Dragon and Flying-type Pokémon are still common. Notably, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Rayquaza can Mega Evolve simply by knowing the move Dragon Ascent, even without a Mega Stone.

Perhaps most significantly, this change allows anyone battling with Mega Rayquaza to use held items. A Focus Sash, for example, will protect it from being instantly defeated by Ice-type attacks, as well as powerful moves from popular Pokémon like Xerneas, Garchomp, and Baxcalibur. This could be a turning point for the competitive scene in PLZA, and the change is permanent.
