Funko Fusion's Eddy is More Than an Evil, Corrupted Version of Freddy

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the creation of Eddy Funko in the game Funko Fusion has truly piqued my interest. The team at 10:10 Games has done an exceptional job in crafting this villainous doppelgänger of our beloved Freddy Funko.

In simpler terms, Freddy Funko, the beloved symbol of the Funko brand, is known for his kind heart, boundless imagination, and affection towards numerous Pop characters from famous intellectual properties. However, every light has its shadow, and in the game “Funko Fusion,” Freddy encounters his sinister twin, Eddy Funko. Eddy is a unique character conceived by the team behind “Funko Fusion” and now belongs to the collection of authentic figures, even having a Pop figure of his own crafted.

10:10 Games team members such as Arthur Parsons (design director and head of publishing), Wil Evans (lead designer), Sean Dudley (lead character artist), and Andy Dolan (animation director) shared insights about designing the game’s antagonist with Game Rant. They talked about Eddy Funko’s design inspired by “Grease,” how he exploits his powers of possession to dominate other characters in Funko Fusion, as well as additional details. They subtly hinted that players will uncover more about Eddy Funko’s intriguing backstory throughout their gameplay experience, but without revealing any spoilers. (This transcript has been condensed for clarity and brevity.)

Eddy Funko’s Villain Origin Story

Q: Can you talk a little bit about how Eddy Funko came about and any iterations he went through?

Dudley: We had multiple discussions with both Funko and their character and concept teams regarding Eddy Funko. Funko provided us with a comparison of Eddy to characters like Superman and Bizarro. Our design process was heavily influenced by the aesthetic of ’60s Americana, and I often imagined the costumes from Grease as a source of inspiration. Early designs leaned towards a high-school jock look, but after exchanging ideas with Funko, we ultimately decided on a more stylish biker guy image, complete with a messy slicked-back hairstyle, a cool leather jacket adorned with Eddy’s own logo, and still maintaining a touch of Freddy through the classic bow tie.

Dolan: Our task was to create an evil, corrupt version of Freddy, and it was enjoyable to express that in his actions, with a playful, exaggerated style. Many of his poses display him hunching over, clasping his hands together, or giving off a sense of mischief. Even when he’s walking or running, he leans forward, arms outstretched like a villainous character from a cartoon, pursuing someone down a long hallway.

Q: How did you settle on an “Evil twin” approach for Eddy?

Narrator: Creating Eddy was a blast, and Eddy stands in stark contrast to Freddy. To preserve the mystery and intrigue surrounding him and his past for gamers, I’ll let them discover these details on their own. Suffice it to say, Eddy is an extraordinary character, and players will grasp his significance as they delve into the game.

Q: What was it like working with actor Clancy Brown as the voice of Eddy?

We’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Clancy on previous projects, and he is an exceptional voice actor. When conceptualizing Eddy, his character, and personality, Clancy was the individual who sprang to mind first. He has delivered a fantastic performance, as he consistently does.

Eddy Funko’s Mysterious Powers

Could you explain how Eddy’s ability to possess things evolved or morphed in his early ideas? Also, I’m curious about the process behind creating the character designs for entities controlled by Eddy.

Dudley: During development, we adjusted various features of Eddy’s possession according to the storyline. Collaborating with the Funko team, we brainstormed and created a possessed version for Eddy. Our aim was to preserve the original characters while incorporating Eddy’s unique color scheme and wild-eyed appearance. In essence, we were transforming these familiar and beloved characters into an ‘Eddified’ form.

A: It seems that Eddy serves as the link between the different IPs (Intellectual Properties) in Funko Fusion. In what way did this “linking role” influence the progression of the story?

In our plan, we aimed to let the players witness significant milestones from these IPs while crafting a narrative that connects everything cohesively. Eddy serves as the main catalyst for the turmoil in every world we explore. This unique element allows us to intertwine our tale with what has previously been set up, thus maintaining continuity while providing an original narrative. For instance, Eddy triggers the chaos and destruction at the beginning of Jurassic World, enabling us to narrate the unfolding events, but simultaneously preserving our continuous storyline, thereby allowing us to tell a tale that transcends the primary narrative.
