Future DC Games May Be Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the dark and gritty streets of Gotham City, I can’t help but feel a tinge of concern about Warner Bros.’ decision to heavily focus on Batman in their upcoming projects. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Caped Crusader as much as the next guy, but the DC universe is rich with characters that deserve their time in the spotlight too.

Following a series of underperforming releases, Warner Bros. has announced a change in strategy. Rather than working on titles from all its extensive intellectual properties, the studio intends to prioritize four key franchises: Mortal Kombat, DC Comics, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones. For the DC Comics franchise, the studio is particularly keen on spotlighting Batman and his engaging cast of sidekicks. However, while this could potentially yield something remarkable, it might not be the most optimal approach.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but admire how DC has built an impressive roster of iconic characters, from Wonder Woman and The Flash to Green Lantern and beyond. Each one holds a special place in the hearts of gamers. But when it comes to sheer popularity, none compares to the enigmatic figure of Batman. This focus on his story has undeniably given rise to some remarkable games. Yet, I can’t help but wonder if this singular focus might, in the future, pose challenges for DC as a whole, as other characters may start to feel overshadowed.

DC”s Focus on Batman May Not Be a Great Way Forward

The Arkham Series is Currently in a Rough Spot

One potential way to rephrase this is: It might not be wise to concentrate on Batman, given that his gaming world appears to be experiencing some turbulence at present. Although the LEGO Batman franchise continues to thrive, the Arkham series has faced challenges lately. The initial Arkham trilogy set a high standard for what constitutes an excellent superhero video game, but since Arkham Knight, the series hasn’t managed to create the same level of impact.

Originally, it was anticipated that “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” would be an impressive follow-up in the Rocksteady series, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. The emphasis on live-service sparked much debate, the narrative seemed underwhelming to numerous players, and overall, the gameplay experience did not measure up to its predecessors. Moreover, the storyline’s portrayal of Batman left a bitter aftertaste for many fans.

Apart from “Suicide Squad”, subsequent Arkham games following the original trilogy have not been particularly successful in winning over audiences. For instance, 2013’s “Batman: Arkham Origins” and “Batman: Arkham VR” received mixed reviews, while “Batman: Arkham Knight”, despite receiving good reviews, seems to have faded into obscurity. Another mainline Batman: Arkham game might be worth a shot, but if it continues the franchise’s recent pattern, it could potentially tarnish its reputation even further for many fans.

Too Many Batman Experiences May Burn Players Out

Surely, Warner Bros. isn’t bound exclusively to the Batman: Arkham series, given that superheroes frequently undergo reboots. There are countless tales yet untold and gameplay styles unexplored, suggesting an endless possibility for a Batman-themed adventure in different formats. Yet, it seems the time may be ripe for a shift away from Batman, despite Warner Bros.’ current plans.

For quite some time now, Batman has been the iconic symbol of the DC Universe, given his status as their highest-earning hero. Over the past few years, he’s graced both the big and small screens in numerous movies and video games. At present, not one but two live-action series featuring The Dark Knight are underway, and his arch-nemesis, Joker, is set to return in a new standalone film titled “Joker: Folie a Deux“. While this abundance of Batman content delights fans, there’s a concern that if video games continue to revolve around him, fan enthusiasm might start to wane due to potential burnout.

Warner Bros. might find themselves in a situation where they have too much of one popular character – Batman. With DC Universe boasting numerous characters that could stand out in their individual video games, making only Batman the focus might lessen the unique appeal. Introducing other superheroes’ stories between Batman’s next adventures could generate excitement and anticipation among fans. However, it seems that players may have to wait a while longer for these experiences, as per Warner Bros.’ current plans.
