This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle‘s DLC.
For over four decades, the Indiana Jones series has delved into a variety of mythologies and historical ideas, encompassing everything from Christianity and Hinduism to Egyptian lore, as well as more speculative Sci-Fi themes such as multidimensional travel and time manipulation. Beyond the main films, the Indiana Jones universe extends even further.
As an ardent fan, I can confidently say that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle delves into a cherished narrative, yet gives it a fresh perspective. The main character, Indy, embarks on an exhilarating quest to uncover sacred artifacts hidden in iconic historical landmarks across the globe. The latest addition, The Order of Giants DLC, offers a concise, mostly self-contained adventure that kicks off Indy’s Great Circle journey. Its engaging plotline should serve as the blueprint for every future Indiana Jones story.
Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants Is a Melting Pot of Mythology

In the expansion pack titled “The Order of Giants” from the game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” the narrative commences as our hero Indiana Jones embarks on a quest to retrieve ‘The Nameless Crusader’s Helmet’ hidden beneath the Vatican. During his exploration, Indy uncovers not only this helmet but also a variety of artifacts left behind from the Crusades. The enigmatic tale of the Nameless Crusader unfolds further in his concealed tomb located within Rome’s Cloaca Maxima. This burial site is adorned with Christian symbolism, as well as depictions of the Garden of Eden and other significant Biblical events.

In Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants, there’s an interesting twist as it delves into Greek mythology, which isn’t typically explored in the series. As players uncover ancient letters, they stumble upon mentions of a new gladiator champion under Ancient Roman Emperor Nero. This powerful warrior hailed from Greece and was infamously known as the ‘Monster of Crete.’ The game suggests that this warrior may be linked to the creation of the Minotaur legend, given his appearance in battle – he dons heavy armor and a helmet shaped like a bull’s head.

In the Order of Giants, you’ll find a hint of mythology that blends elements from Rome and Iran. As the story progresses in the DLC, it’s unveiled that there exists a hidden cult residing beneath Rome. This secret society is called ‘The Cult of Mithras’, devoted to the ancient deity Mithras, who was linked with the sun, war, and justice in both Roman and Iranian mythologies.
In the adventure of Indiana Jones titled “The Great Circle,” followers of the Cult of Mithras are convinced that they must unlock a formidable gate hidden within Rome’s sewer system, the Cloaca Maxima. They believe they can achieve this using round keys discovered in the tombs of giants. Once the gate is opened, they expect to find a “holy bull” inside, which they plan to sacrifice with the Dagger of Mithras. The ritualistic slaying of the bull is believed to grant the performer spiritual insight.

Future Indiana Jones Stories Shouldn‘t Be Afraid to Mix Mythologies
Typically, Indiana Jones tales often revolve around a single myth or historical aspect, making them easier for the masses to understand and providing a deep exploration of selected content. However, Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants stands out by blending various mythologies and histories together, offering a more diverse and exciting narrative experience.

Combining various mythologies as The Order of Giants does by placing the Monster of Crete in Rome’s Colosseum, adds an epic scale to the adventure, suggesting that the artifact or individual in question is so influential and timeless that they are embedded within the very fabric of multiple ancient belief systems and civilizations, making them truly legendary.
