The developers of “Rematch” at Sloclap have given additional information about the tournament mode they’ve been teasing, set to arrive soon. When it was released on June 19th, “Rematch” saw tremendous success with over 92,000 players joining in just the first day. While the initial excitement may have subsided a bit since then, this soccer game has certainly found its place and continues to attract a growing fanbase.
On the release date, the creators of Rematch shared a blog post outlining future updates for the game. In this post, they talked about their plans to implement crossplay functionality, enhance gameplay, fix bugs, add more social aspects, offer casual play upgrades, and introduce new competitive features in the near future. Crossplay integration was identified as their top priority at the moment, but the blog also hinted that work is currently being done on several other systems such as a tournament mode, player-led clubs, and an elite leaderboard.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Pierre Tarno, Co-Founder and CEO of Sloclap, announced that tournament mode will likely be the first competitive feature added to Rematch. According to Tarno, these tournaments will primarily consist of scheduled events, offering varying rewards compared to regular ranked matches in Rematch. Players can choose whether to invite friends to form a team or use matchmaking to play with others. It is uncertain if the matchmaking will be random or based on Skill Matchmaking Rank (MMR), but the latter seems more probable.
Sloclap Reveals Details About Rematch’s Tournament Mode
Tarno disclosed that the tournaments are anticipated to endure approximately two hours, but he didn’t provide details about the specific structure of these events. Since Rematch’s standard match duration is six minutes and a minute is typically allotted between matches for players to prepare, it’s reasonable to assume that each tournament will consist of 16 teams in a single-elimination format if there’s no double elimination. However, if the tournaments adopt a double-elimination format with both winner and loser brackets, there would be 8 teams participating in each tournament.
Alongside discussing the tournament mode, Pierre additionally provided insights into the club creation aspect of Rematch, which can be thought of as a version of guilds or clans in the game. Unlike traditional clubs with generic logos and names, Rematch will draw inspiration from real-life soccer clubs to let players establish their in-game teams based on actual geographical locations. Tarno explained that this is intended to give the game an immersive soccer experience by grounding it in reality, focusing on real places, real cities, and football fantasy. However, players will have the freedom to choose their club’s location regardless of where they reside currently. Tarno clarified that this feature is planned for a later stage in development.
Tournaments can serve as an initial step for enhancing the current gameplay experience in a title, since they introduce a fresh type of competitive matching that players can anticipate. However, since Rematch isn’t free-to-play, its player base might pose a challenge to the new game mode, as it can be difficult to ensure that 80 players in a single tournament have roughly similar skill levels without a substantial number of active players.
