As a long-time fan of the Resident Evil series, I can confidently say that the franchise has always been at its best when it delivers a captivating ensemble of villains. From the terrifying creatures in the original games to the charismatic antagonists in more recent installments, these adversaries have not only kept me on the edge of my seat but also left lasting impressions that I carry with me even after finishing each game.
The Resident Evil series is known for breaking conventions and starting fresh at any opportunity, which has resulted in an inconsistent narrative and unresolved arcs for its longstanding characters. However, this approach has prevented the franchise from growing stale or facing premature obsolescence. Lately, Resident Evil seems to be making a concerted effort to weave a consistent story with games like Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, with Resident Evil 9 expected to continue this narrative thread. Given that the Shadows of Rose DLC for Village is said to conclude the Winters family saga, it makes sense to anticipate Chris Redfield as the protagonist in Resident Evil 9, despite some recent leaks suggesting otherwise.
Regardless, the antagonists in the Resident Evil series have always been just as iconic as its heroes, and in games like Resident Evil 7 and Village, the villains take center stage for a change. This doesn’t mean Ethan is a weak protagonist, especially considering the surprising twist about him in Village. In fact, the Winter Saga games feature some of the franchise’s most endearing and chilling antagonists. It appears that a new trend is emerging where players encounter numerous main villains, and if Resident Evil 9 continues this trend, it should be filled with both lovable and detestable characters.
Resident Evil 7’s Baker Family is an Unforgettable Horror Trio
In the game Resident Evil 7, the standout character might be the Baker mansion itself, but it could have lacked tension without the Baker family who lived there. If they were less dynamic and frightening, the mansion would have felt eerily empty. The Bakers – Jack, Marguerite, and Lucas – are all under the influence of the Mold and take on the menacing, grotesque qualities reminiscent of the Sawyer family from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, in a decaying house covered in mold.
Jack consistently reappears and poses a relentless danger; Marguerite undergoes a terrifying metamorphosis into an insect-like creature; Lucas, with actions reminiscent of movies like Saw or Hostel, exhibits a grating insanity. It’s these three characters who give the seventh mainline installment of Resident Evil its unique flavor and longevity. If Resident Evil 9 leans more heavily on horror elements, learning from the experiences of Resident Evil 7 could be extremely beneficial.
Resident Evil Village’s Entourage of Villains is as Zany as It is Thrilling
In “Resident Evil 7”, the villains are confined to the Baker estate, no matter how vast and terrifying that Louisiana land may be. On the other hand, “Resident Evil Village” distributes its main antagonists across unique territories, which is beneficial for level design and enhancing the overall sense of enchantment. Each setting serves as a distinctive mark of its villain, such as Lady Alcina Dimitrescu’s Castle Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento’s House Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau’s Reservoir, Karl Heisenberg’s factory, and the titular village that players can traverse.
- Castle Dimitrescu, which was explorable in an early demo of Village, is only one chapter of a huge story and includes three boss fights against Dimitrescu’s three vampire daughters.
- House Beneviento is an abrupt plunge into survival horror in the franchise’s most salient descent into terror in decades.
- The Reservoir is a spectacle as Ethan wades through filthy water while trying to evade a giant fish-like Moreau.
- Heisenberg’s factory pits Ethan against soldat cyborg experimentations.
It’s easy to pick favorites of these villains and a big portion of why one character may be favored over another is likely due to the region players explore before they even encounter them. House Beneviento’s Angie boss fight isn’t nearly as engrossing as the eerie, subversive house’s basement level, for instance.
Similar to Resident Evil 7, Village’s intriguing and captivating antagonists shine in every scene. While Resident Evil 9 might not require more antagonists to be strong narratively, the variety of personalities and characters we’ve seen so far has been a delight. It would be challenging for the upcoming ninth mainline installment if it only had one protagonist dealing with such memorable villains, but consistently creating such likable and unforgettable antagonists is certainly no easy feat.
