As a longtime fan of retro video games and the Game Boy Advance in particular, I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming release of Xeno Crisis on my beloved handheld console. The nostalgia of playing classic top-down arena shooters on my GBA brings back memories of countless hours spent mastering the art of dodging bullets and taking down hordes of enemies, all while on the go.

Studio Bitmap Bureau unveiled intentions to adapt their 2019 arena shooter game, Xeno Crisis, for the classic Game Boy Advance (GBA) this year. The GBA continues to be cherished by many as one of the best handheld gaming devices ever made and remains an esteemed relic from the 32-bit era of video game consoles. In the present day, more than two decades following its debut, avid GBA enthusiasts can anticipate a fresh addition boasting nostalgic appeal and contemporary gaming advancements.

Enthusiasts of top-down shooter games may be familiar with “Xeno Crisis,” Bitmap Bureau’s highly praised 2D pixel creation, unveiled in 2019. This indie game is an homage to classic arcade titles like “Mercs” and “Smash TV,” both popular in the 1990s. In “Xeno Crisis,” players assume the identity of a seasoned marine dispatched to Outpost 88, a research facility under attack by extraterrestrial beings. Similar to traditional arcade games, the game supports local multiplayer on most platforms, allowing for solo or cooperative play.

Xeno Crisis, a popular top-down arena shooter game, has previously been made available on various retro consoles such as the Sega Genesis and Neo Geo. Starting by the end of Q4 2024, fans can add this game to their Game Boy Advance collection. For those who prefer physical copies, they will receive region-free cartridges along with an instruction manual. For Game Boy Advance enthusiasts using emulators or flash cartridges, a digital ROM of Xeno Crisis will be up for sale on Bitmap Bureau’s official website at the time of release.

Retro Gamers Are Loving Xeno Crisis

Before Xeno Crisis officially drops on Gameboy Advance, it’s worth noting that this game may join the ranks of GBA classics. Since its debut in 2019, Xeno Crisis has gained recognition on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms. Critics and retro gaming enthusiasts have commended the game for its captivating pixel art design and engrossing fast-paced gameplay. Consequently, Xeno Crisis holds a favorable rating of “Very Positive” on Steam.

For Game Boy Advance enthusiasts aiming to grow their collection, you can now pre-order a real copy of “Xeno Crisis” on Bitmap Bureau’s website for around $45. As a bonus, those who purchase the physical edition will receive a free digital version of the ROM download.
