As a hardcore gamer with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of gaming controversies and drama. But nothing quite compares to the ongoing saga surrounding Midnight Society and their upcoming game, Deadrop. I was initially thrilled when the studio, co-founded by the legendary Dr. Disrespect, announced its first project. The hype train was in full swing as we all eagerly awaited a return to form for the controversial streamer, who had been banned from Twitch under mysterious circumstances.
Despite the recent uproar involving co-founder Dr. Disrespect, the game development studio Midnight Society is pushing ahead with their planned 2024 release of their debut shooter game called Deadrop. This online multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) was initially unveiled in early 2022 by the studio, which includes Dr. Disrespect as one of its founders. Although there were doubts about the release date due to the controversy, Midnight Society has now confirmed that their initial release window remains unchanged.
Previously known for his status as a highly recognized and adored gaming streamer, Herschel “Dr. Disrespect” Beahm IV has recently faced criticism. The controversial ban of Dr. Disrespect from Twitch resurfaced when an ex-employee of the platform alleged that it was due to Dr. Disrespect sexting a minor, a claim later admitted by the streamer himself. This scandal led to the termination of several partnerships he had, including one with a game studio he co-founded. However, Midnight Society seems to be thriving without Dr. Disrespect’s involvement.
Midnight Society’s Deadrop Still Scheduled for 2024 Release
According to IGN’s report, Robert Bowling, a co-founder of Midnight Society, assured Bloomberg in an interview that the launch of their upcoming game, “Deadrop,” was progressing as scheduled. The planned release is set for the last quarter of 2024, and development has not been impacted by any controversies involving Dr. Disrespect. Bowling added that Dr. Disrespect’s role within the studio primarily focuses on attracting viewers and building a community around “Deadrop.” Additionally, Midnight Society has successfully secured $24 million in funding for the game’s production.
Although Dr. Disrespect helped popularize the game Deadrop and Midnight Society, the game itself has had its share of issues. It was announced early on by Midnight Society that the game would offer an NFT-based Founder’s Pass, granting players access to exclusive cosmetics and early versions of the game. However, Deadrop faced criticism shortly after it was unveiled due to using a picture from Cyberpunk 2077 on its official website without permission. This mistake was swiftly corrected by the web developer.
Amidst the buzzing debate about Dr. Disrespect, the well-known streamer has mostly kept a low profile in recent weeks due to the social media uproar. He last streamed on YouTube more than a month ago and has been absent from Twitter as well. However, some fans have spotted an altered Twitter header image from Dr. Disrespect, hinting at a possible comeback to streaming. Despite the controversy affecting his reputation, Midnight Society continues to thrive without him.
