As a gamer who has lived through the highs and lows of Westeros, I find myself both intrigued and saddened by the recent announcements regarding Game of Thrones alumni and their apparent distancing from the franchise. Having followed the series since its inception, it’s hard to imagine Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) not watching House of the Dragon, a spin-off that continues the epic saga they helped build.

An actor who was a cast member in the popular TV show “Game of Thrones” stated that he won’t be tuning in to watch its prequel, “House of the Dragon.” This same performer also declared that he has no intention of watching the series he once belonged to during the upcoming years.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ acclaimed HBO series, “Game of Thrones,” adapted from George R.R. Martin’s books, was a massive success. This epic drama unfolded over eight seasons between 2011 and 2019. The show catapulted numerous actors to stardom by offering them memorable roles in the series. Some of the most popular characters include Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Bella Ramsay as Lyanna Mormont, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Richard Madden as Robb Stark, and Kit Harington as Jon Snow. Recently, one of these actors confessed that he hasn’t been able to watch “House of the Dragon” or rewatch “Game of Thrones.”

As a devoted fan myself, I recently found myself chatting with the Associated Press on the red carpet for my latest series, “Industry”. In our conversation, I confessed that I can’t envision myself revisiting the world of “House of the Dragons”. Moreover, I held off watching “Game of Thrones” for quite some time due to my extensive history within the franchise. However, I extend my warmest wishes to everyone associated with these projects, as I’ve heard great things about their progress and success. Yet, I can’t see myself revisiting Game of Thrones anytime soon.

Harington’s statement caused a bit of surprise among viewers since it differed from his previous remarks regarding the series. Initially, when “House of the Dragon” debuted in 2022, Harington expressed his enjoyment of the show, stating that he was really enjoying it because one of his friends, Miguel Sapochnik, was the showrunner. He praised the job done by the creators, appreciating their efforts to establish a distinct identity for the new series within the same universe. However, Sapochnik stepped down as showrunner after Season 1 but continues to be involved in the project as an executive producer.

Harington played Jon Snow, one of the iconic characters in the franchise, which earned him two Emmys, including Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2016 and Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2019. His statement seemed to suggest that he was distancing himself from the franchise. However, the decision must be somewhat recent because he was supposed to star in a Jon Snow sequel series that was nixed in April of this year. Additionally, if he really wants to move on from the franchise, it will be huge work because more projects related to the Westeros lore are coming. Aside from the House of the Dragon, a spinoff series titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is in the works and more spinoffs are on the cards.

As a devoted fan myself, I can relate to Kit Harington’s decision to step back from the world of Game of Thrones. Interestingly, his co-star Emilia Clarke shared similar feelings about the prequel spinoff, House of the Dragon. Despite being thrilled about its success, she confessed that she couldn’t bring herself to watch it. In her own words, “It just feels so odd, so strange… like being invited to a school reunion that’s not my year.” After being immersed in Westeros for almost a decade, it’s no wonder they might feel a bit detached from the magical realm they once called home.

Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon stream on Max.
