To celebrate its 15th anniversary, HBO released a special trailer showcasing the world of Game of Thrones and its lasting impact on popular culture. The original HBO series, Game of Thrones, first aired on April 17, 2011, with the episode “The Winter Is Coming,” and concluded its first season on June 19, 2011, with “Fire and Blood.”
Since it first aired, Game of Thrones has become a huge cultural phenomenon, with fans all over the world constantly quoting it and recognizing its iconic imagery. The show’s fictional world, Westeros, remains incredibly popular, and now HBO has released a new trailer celebrating the series.
15 Years Of The Game of Thrones Universe Captured In 55 Seconds
As a huge fan, I was immediately hooked when the Reign of Thrones trailer started with Cersei Lannister’s iconic line, “When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die.” It quickly flashed back to some of the most unforgettable moments – Jon Snow facing that terrifying cavalry charge in the Battle of the Bastards, Cersei and Viserys sitting on the Iron Throne, the heartbreaking scene of Catelyn Stark’s death at the Red Wedding, and even a look at Ser Duncan the Tall before his legendary Trial of Seven. It really brought back all the feels!
Daemon Targaryen fiercely holds Rhaenyra Targaryen while proclaiming, “Dragons, not dreams, made us kings,” dismissing the importance of Aegon’s dream and the Targaryen prophecy that foretells Westeros’s destiny. The trailer then marks 15 years of the world of Westeros with a shot of Drogon flying over the Dothraki during the Battle of the Goldroad.
The trailer highlights key moments and themes of the upcoming series. We see Daenerys Targaryen proclaiming her right to rule, followed by scenes of the Goldroad battle’s devastation and Daemon Targaryen securing alliances. The phrase “15 Years of Legacy” appears, then “15 Years of Honor” as Ser Duncan prepares for a dangerous trial. Quick cuts showcase the contrasting concepts of “mercy” and “vengeance” alongside other important scenes, before shifting the focus to the Sea Snake.

As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I was excited to see the trailer announce that the story is still going strong! It focuses on the existing show, House of the Dragon, and teases the new one, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s great to know we’re getting more from this world!
Even fifteen years after it first aired, Game of Thrones is still one of HBO’s biggest hits, and the network is continuing to build out its world. The next season of its prequel, House of the Dragon, is set to debut on HBO and Max in June 2026, after a two-year wait.
