A gamer recently completed a fascinating project: they transformed a Nintendo 64 controller into a fully functional, self-contained Game Boy Advance. This clever modification packs all the features of a Game Boy Micro – the most compact Game Boy Advance model – into the N64 controller, even including a screen for gameplay.
As a longtime gamer, I’ve seen some amazing things when it comes to console mods! People are so creative – I’ve seen everything from the smallest Wii ever made to someone actually building a Game Boy DS inside a Pokedex! It’s incredible how much technology has advanced. Now, because of smaller components, we can really repackage these old consoles into much more compact designs. It’s a testament to how far things have come!
Gamer Creates N64 Controller That Works as a Game Boy Advance
Recently, a Reddit user named MaSaKee undertook an impressive project: transforming a classic green N64 into a functioning Game Boy Micro. The resulting device is fully operational, featuring a rechargeable battery and an integrated screen. To achieve this, MaSaKee carefully created a small opening in the front of the N64 controller to accommodate a 2-inch Game Boy Micro display. What sets this project apart from some others is its ability to play original Game Boy Advance cartridges. MaSaKee altered the N64’s expansion port to allow for Game Boy Advance cartridge compatibility, and demonstrated this with a photo of a Castlevania cartridge inserted into the controller.
The device has been further updated with a power switch on the expansion port, a USB-C port, and a headphone jack located on the back of the controller. Because there are differences in the button layout and number of controls between the two devices, MaSaKee adjusted how the N64 controller’s buttons function. Specifically, the Z button on the back now acts as the Select button on the GBA, and the C buttons have been reprogrammed to manage the screen’s volume and brightness.

This post has become very popular with the gaming community, receiving almost 5,000 upvotes when it was published. Although some modifications like this might be difficult to use in practice, it would likely be enjoyable to play on the Game Boy Micro’s small screen for those who are willing. Many modders have created similar mash-up mods combining different Nintendo consoles before, so we can expect to see more unique creations like this in the future.
