The most innovative ideas often seem crazy when you first hear them. They frequently involve mixing several different types of games together in a bold, experimental way. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always work, and can sometimes lead to a game that feels messy and doesn’t quite come together.
However, when these games succeed, they become truly remarkable and memorable. They’re the titles that weren’t afraid to be different, the ones that took a bold risk and completely nailed it.
Crypt of the NecroDancer
Dancing To The Beat of a Dungeon Crawl
Combining a challenging dungeon adventure with the precision of a rhythm game might sound strange, but it actually creates something truly brilliant. You move and attack to the beat of the music, and losing the rhythm slows you down. Even just walking becomes a carefully planned and exciting sequence of moves.
The music is central to everything in this game. It’s more than just something playing in the background – it is the game itself. Battles aren’t simply about reacting to what happens; the music makes you anticipate your opponent’s moves and feel the rhythm of the fight. This game demonstrates that dungeon crawling can be just as much about enjoying the music and getting into a flow as it is about collecting powerful items.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Dragons, Karaoke, and Turn-Based Combat?
The Yakuza series was famous for its intense, up-close combat. So, when this game switched to a traditional, turn-based battle system like those found in classic Japanese RPGs, it seemed like a huge change – even a departure from what made the series special. However, the game pulls it off thanks to its incredible main character, Ichiban Kasuga. He’s a passionate fan of Dragon Quest, and that enthusiasm makes the new battle style feel surprisingly fitting and natural.
The game is a wonderfully strange mix of touching stories and over-the-top action. During fights, tough enemies transform into comical versions of themselves, and you can even call in help like an army of crawfish or a chicken delivery service! But despite all the fun and craziness, there’s a surprisingly complex and rewarding job and skill system at its core. It’s a truly fresh take on the genre.
Slay the Spire
Cards As Weapons, Decks As Strategy
Slay the Spire is where the deckbuilding roguelike genre really took off. It successfully combined the replayability of roguelikes with the strategic depth of deckbuilding, creating a popular formula many games still use today – and rightfully so, it’s a fantastic game! In each playthrough, you build a card deck from nothing, battle bizarre creatures as you climb a mysterious spire, and carefully manage powerful relics and limited energy.
What I love most about this game is how it constantly puts you in really difficult spots. Every turn, you’re wrestling with tough decisions – do I add these awesome but risky cards, or stick to what’s reliable? But even when things don’t go your way, it never feels bad. It just makes you want to jump right back in and try a different approach. It’s an amazing mix of planning, a little bit of luck, and being able to think on your feet, which makes it incredibly replayable. I can seriously play this forever!
Monster Train
The Devil Runs on Rails
Okay, so when I first saw Monster Train, I thought, “Oh great, another Slay the Spire copycat.” But honestly, it’s way more than that! It takes the deck-building formula and adds this really cool twist. Instead of just fighting on one screen, battles happen across multiple floors inside a train car. You’re not just building a deck, you’re actively defending different levels of the train from enemies, which adds a whole new layer of strategy. It’s seriously addictive!
engine, the “pyre,” from waves of angelic invaders who are pushing their way up from the bottom.
This game is a fast-paced, exciting mix of card-based strategy and tower defense, offering surprisingly complex choices. You don’t just play cards – you carefully place units on each level, manage your resources, and try to create powerful combinations. Plus, the game’s concept – rescuing the last pieces of Hell on a train – perfectly matches its intense and energetic gameplay.
Brütal Legend
A Heavy Metal Album Cover Come to Life
Brutal Legend is a wild game! It’s an open-world adventure where Jack Black plays a guy obsessed with the road who ends up in a fantasy world based on heavy metal music. The gameplay is unpredictable – you’ll be battling demons with a guitar one minute, and then leading armies in a strategy game the next. It’s a really unique experience!
While not everyone loved the real-time strategy parts of the game, they’re a big reason it stands out and is so memorable. The developers at Double Fine really leaned into the unique concept, filling the game with famous rock stars like Ozzy Osbourne and creating a world that looks like a classic progressive rock album cover. It’s flawed, but ultimately, there’s nothing else quite like it.
Inscryption
Cards, Horror, and Rabbits With Knives
Inscryption isn’t just a mix of different game types – it completely reimagines them into something fresh and frightening. It begins as a seemingly straightforward, spooky card game, but quickly evolves with escape-room style puzzles, transforming into a true psychological horror experience. By the end, it’s become something unlike anything you’ve played before.
What makes Inscryption so brilliant is its ability to constantly change genres, keeping players uneasy and surprised. Just when you feel like you understand the game, it throws a curveball and introduces a completely new, bizarre element. This is all held together by a consistently unsettling atmosphere – from the creepy music and mysterious story to the feeling that the game is a living entity, and maybe even hostile towards you.
Gunpoint
Stealth Meets Pure, Unadulterated Slapstick
Gunpoint is a fantastic game that blends the atmosphere of classic noir detective stories with the challenge of puzzle-platforming. You play as Richard Conway, a freelance spy who breaks into secure locations using a device that lets him reprogram electronics. This allows for incredibly creative and often hilarious solutions – like linking doors to cameras or alarms to light switches – as you navigate each level.
This game doesn’t focus on traditional hiding; instead, it’s all about clever, inventive solutions. You might rewire a light switch to launch a guard, or connect an elevator to a hidden trap. Despite its brief gameplay, it offers a surprising amount of freedom to express your creativity. One moment you’ll feel like a skilled secret agent, and the next, a hilariously inept troublemaker.
