Some video games refuse to be confined to the past due to reasons such as nostalgia, technological enhancements, or exposing them to new audiences. These are the games that have undergone remastering not just once, but multiple times, spanning various platforms and eras.
Instead of merely being ordinary adaptations, these are titles that have undergone repeated transformations – being refashioned, reinvented, and re-released multiple times. Each version comes with a bit more shine, a tad more detail, and frequently, an entirely fresh fanbase.
In the realm of survival horror to expansive RPGs, these captivating games consistently progress while preserving their initial charm. Once you’ve experienced them, it’s hard not to find yourself drawn back for more – and maybe even a repeat performance. Indeed, Mr. Howard, I can’t resist the allure of Skyrim once again.

Halo: Combat Evolved
Evergreen Futuristic Combat
Microsoft’s leading shooter game significantly transformed console first-person shooting experiences and ignited the renowned Halo series.
10 years after its original release, I was thrilled to celebrate its anniversary by experiencing a revamped version of Halo: Combat Evolved, titled Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. This special edition boasted enhanced visuals, re-mastered audio, online multiplayer through Xbox LIVE, and the option to switch between original and modern graphics at will.
Initially, the game was added to the Halo: The Master Chief Collection (2014), subsequently experiencing more enhancements such as 4K resolution, PC compatibility, and improved online multiplayer matches. This revival has so far given Halo: Combat Evolved a third lease on life.
In the ongoing saga of Halo Infinite, Halo Combat Evolved stands out as a pivotal foundation stone. Its groundbreaking gameplay mechanics are not its only significance; it also serves as a powerful symbol of how remastered games can safeguard and magnify gaming heritage.

Resident Evil
Fear Through The Decades

Capcom’s groundbreaking survival horror classic has a rich and notable history of being remastered over time. The first significant update occurred in 2002 with the Resident Evil remake for the GameCube, offering significantly enhanced graphics, new locations, and an entire storyline that was initially omitted from the original game.
The remake significantly reshaped the industry’s perspective on remakes, demonstrating that a game could be both loyal to its origins and contemporary. It wasn’t merely an update of the visuals; rather, it fundamentally transformed the tempo, ambiance, and terror elements, offering a fresh experience even for those who were intimately familiar with the original.
In 2015, the high-definition version of that remake was released for modern gaming consoles and computers, featuring widescreen compatibility and an updated control setup. This remaster was both commercially and critically successful, leading many to speculate that another remaster could be on the horizon in the future.

The Last of Us
When Does It End?

Over the course of ten years, the game “The Last of Us” has undergone three different iterations. Initially, it was updated in 2014 for the PS4, boasting enhanced graphics and rendering capabilities, as well as incorporating all previously released DLC content.
Playing the game on the PS4 version offered a more fluid frame rate, better resolution, and quicker load times; improvements that intensified the emotional impact of the story even further. For many enthusiasts, particularly those who joined later in the PS3’s lifespan, it became the ultimate way to experience
In 2022, Naughty Dog unveiled “The Last of Us Part I,” a comprehensive remake powered by the PS5 engine, boasting enhanced visuals, AI, accessibility features, and a version for PC. The acclaim earned from the HBO series has further propelled its popularity, broadening its fan base.

Shadow of the Colossus
Bigger & Better

Fumito Ueda’s chilling magnum opus has experienced a revival on two occasions. Initially, it resurfaced within the Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, where improvements were made to its resolution and frame rate.
This upgraded high-definition version offered smoother animation and improved textures, while preserving the core PS2 structure. Consequently, it enabled players to re-experience its somber sceneries and colossal creatures with greater stability and precision.
In 2018, Bluepoint Games undertook a complete overhaul of the game for PS4, constructing an entirely new version with contemporary graphics, while maintaining the original’s mood and mechanics. I believe this remake is one of the most visually impressive ever produced.

Tomb Raider
For Double-Wielding Adventures

Back in the year 2007, one of the most recognized video game characters, Lara Croft, was revamped in a fresh take called “Tomb Raider: Anniversary.” This new version utilized the engine from “Tomb Raider: Legend” to re-enact her origin story with more contemporary gameplay mechanics and graphics.
By the year 2024, the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered collection hit the market, boasting upgraded graphics, controls, and the ability to switch between original and contemporary aesthetics. This release also included user-friendly improvements such as advanced lighting, automatic saving, and more refined control mechanisms that helped smooth out some of the series’ previously rough aspects.
This remaster allowed players to experience Lara’s early adventures in a whole new light (again).

Persona 3
Back To School

Persona 3 has stealthily gained recognition as one of the most frequently remastered Japanese role-playing games ever. It was initially re-released in 2007 as Persona 3 FES, featuring an epilogue and additional content. Later on, it was re-introduced in 2009 for the PSP as Persona 3 Portable, offering a female protagonist’s storyline and enhanced gameplay mechanics.
As a devoted enthusiast, I’ve noticed that each iteration of this incredible game brought something special to the table, sparking intense discussions among fans about which one truly encapsulates the essence of the original. For me, the FES version delved deeper into the storyline and provided richer context, while the Portable edition offered a more adaptable gameplay experience, making it easier for newcomers to dive in.
In the year 2023, the classic game Persona 3 Portable received a remaster for contemporary systems, featuring enhanced resolution and user interface. Then, in 2024, Atlus took things up a notch with the complete remake of Persona 3 titled “Reload,” boasting fresh visuals, voice acting, and modernized gameplay mechanics. By now, the number of times fans have ventured into Tartarus is simply too numerous to count.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
A Better Card Game Than Poker

Connecting the storylines of both Kingdom Hearts and KH2, Chain of Memories was the game that introduced a distinctive card-based combat system. This battle system sparked division among fans due to its unique approach. First launched for the Game Boy Advance, it later received an upgraded 3D remake in 2007, titled Re:Chain of Memories, on PlayStation 2. In addition to voice acting and cutscenes, this version also featured enhanced combat mechanics compared to its original release.
Initially, it was part of the “Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix” compilation on PlayStation 3 in 2013. Later, it was refined, combined with the “2.5” remix, and subsequently released for PlayStation 4 in 2017.
Initially, I found the card system to be a bit hard to get used to. However, once I grasped its concept, it introduced an unexpected strategic depth. For enthusiasts, it’s not merely an ancillary tale; it’s a crucial piece of the puzzle. And just like the rest of the series, it’s peculiar, breathtaking, and indelible.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Todd Howard’s Guide To Passive Income

Bethesda’s expansive role-playing game set in a fantasy world has been re-released so frequently that it’s become a common topic of humor among gamers. The first significant update for the game came with the Legendary Edition in 2013, offering all three DLC expansions and some technical enhancements.
2016 saw the debut of Skyrim Special Edition, which introduced enhanced graphics and console-based mod support for the very first time. This breakthrough allowed gamers to customize the game in a myriad of imaginative manners.
Initially, it wasn’t designed for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. However, later on, it was optimized to run smoothly on these new platforms. In the year 2021, the game celebrated its 10th anniversary with an Anniversary Edition that included additional content, advanced next-gen enhancements, and a comprehensive fishing system – a feature long-awaited by fans.
At the moment, Skyrim is almost everywhere except for your smartwatch. This fact demonstrates not only its initial greatness but also Bethesda’s unwavering dedication to keeping it relevant. With The Elder Scrolls VI likely years off, there’s a good chance that Skyrim might receive another update before then.
2.
Final Fantasy IV
Consistent Numbering Is For Losers

Initially, the game appeared under two different names: Final Fantasy IV: Easy Type in Japan and Final Fantasy II in the U.S. Later, it received a comprehensive 3D remake in 2007 on the Nintendo DS, featuring voice acting, fresh cutscenes, and updated mechanics.
In a later development, the same edition was adapted for use on iOS, Android, and Steam platforms, providing an enhanced experience to current users with better resolution and touch controls. The PSP’s “Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection,” released in 2011, offered an upgraded 2D version of the original game, along with the additional chapters known as “Interlude” and the full-length sequel titled “The After Years.
In 2021, the enhanced 2D sprite version of “Final Fantasy IV”, titled Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster, was released. This updated edition features an improved soundtrack, a revamped presentation, all while maintaining a faithful rendition for purists who appreciate the original gameplay and aesthetics.
In an uncommon twist, the classic game Final Fantasy IV (FFIV) is exceptional in having both 3D and 2D remastered editions. Regardless of which version you choose, the tale of Cecil and the Red Wings remains impactful and timeless, spanning generations.

Half-Life
Valve’s True Treasure

2004 marked the initial makeover for Valve’s groundbreaking shooter series with Half-Life: Source, transitioning the game to the Source engine, integrating ragdoll physics, and introducing 5.1 Surround Sound. However, it received criticism due to technical glitches and insufficient graphical enhancements.
The fan-created (and Valve-endorsed) “Black Mesa” undertaking commenced in the year 2012, eventually launching as a complete commercial release in 2020. Featuring revamped graphics, advanced AI, updated lighting, and an entirely remade Xen section.
In November 2023, Valve celebrated Half-Life’s 25th anniversary by significantly upgrading its platform on Steam. This update not only rectified existing issues but also introduced new elements such as the Uplink demo, multiplayer maps, support for 4K resolution, and compatibility with the Steam Deck. Additionally, they released a one-hour documentary featuring insights from the original team members, giving fans a deeper look into the game’s history.
Valve might not be great at counting up to three (a well-known joke), yet their dedication towards keeping their games alive for future generations is truly commendable.
