Games With Better Plot Twists Than Any Movie

Movie twists – like surprising reveals about a killer’s identity or a game-changing secret – can either make a film truly memorable or ruin it. Viewers spend a couple of hours immersed in the story, and while a good twist can be shocking or overwhelming, they ultimately have no control over what happens. This is where video games stand out. Because players actively participate, twists can often have a much stronger impact in games than in movies.

When players actively shape a story – whether through action or choices – it makes the consequences of their decisions, and any resulting surprises, feel more impactful. Let’s look at some of the most memorable plot twists in video game history and how they affected players. These will be brief overviews, as the stories are often quite detailed, but we’ll cover the key points.

There will also be spoilers.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

Far Into The Future

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a game about time travel that focuses on a group of teenagers from various time periods. Players will get to know and connect with these characters through the game’s story and excellent voice acting.

Okay, so there’s a little bit of strategy in how you approach battles, but honestly, this game feels more like a really cool adventure. And get this – the whole time travel thing? It’s a trick! Turns out, all the characters are actually living in a computer simulation on a spaceship. All those different time periods you explore are just different sections of the station itself. It’s a really clever twist, and it totally blew my mind!

BioShock

Would You Kindly?

BioShock begins with a seemingly random event: the main character, Jack, is stranded in the ocean after a plane crash. He discovers an underwater city called Rapture while searching for a lighthouse, but it’s no longer the paradise it once was – it’s now filled with dangerous, genetically altered people.

Throughout the game, it appears Jack is simply trying to survive, but he’s actually being manipulated by the phrase “Would You Kindly?” This phrase compelled him to crash the plane and travel to Rapture, hoping to reach areas reserved for the city’s creator, Andrew Ryan. Ultimately, Jack was sent to assassinate Ryan – who turns out to be his father – at the behest of a man named Fontaine, who was plotting to seize control of Rapture.

Braid

Backwards Man

Released early in the HD gaming era with the Xbox 360, Braid quickly became a major indie success. Players control Tim, a man in a suit, and navigate difficult 2D levels. The goal is to save a princess by using unique time-bending abilities to solve puzzles along the way.

The game’s surprising twist is revealed in the last level, which plays backward. It turns out Tim isn’t the hero trying to save the princess – he’s actually the villain hiding her from the real hero, and this becomes clear as you play through the reversed final stage. For a simple platforming game, the reveal was a genuine shock.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

What Have We Been Fighting For?

Okay, so I just finished Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and wow, this game really threw me for a loop! It starts with a huge shock – you play as Gustave, and he dies after only about ten hours. Turns out, the whole point of the game is to take down this incredibly powerful enchantress called The Paintress, who basically wipes out entire generations of people every year. We finally reach her with the last members of Expedition 33, manage to beat her, and honestly, I thought we’d won… but then the world just started disappearing. It was a wild ride!

The players discovered the world they were battling to save was an illusion when Maelle returned to real-life Paris. While the story doesn’t end there, this reveal is the biggest surprise of the game, and the rest of the adventure focuses on Maelle fixing the problem and restoring what was lost.

Final Fantasy 7

Two Spiked-Up Heroes

Final Fantasy 7 follows Cloud, a former top soldier in the SOLDIER program of the Shinra Corporation. He says he left because he didn’t agree with their practices, but as the story progresses – especially with the appearance of the villain Sephiroth – it becomes clear that Cloud may have memory loss.

Later in the story, Tifa enters Cloud’s mind to help him uncover his real memories. While Cloud’s memories of being a SOLDIER actually belong to his friend, Zack, Cloud wasn’t entirely making things up about fighting Sephiroth and rescuing Tifa years ago. He was present during those events, though he was just a regular guard at the time. This is only a glimpse into how complicated Cloud’s past really is.

The Last Of Us

No Other Choice

Most players likely expected a somber game like The Last of Us wouldn’t end happily. The story follows Joel, a rugged survivor, as he guides a young girl named Ellie across a zombie-filled America, traveling from Boston to Seattle. In Seattle, doctors hoped to perform surgery on Ellie, take something from her, and potentially discover a cure for the outbreak.

Doctors believe a cure is possible, but Joel and the other characters discover in Seattle that creating it requires Ellie’s death. Players are then faced with a difficult choice: either kill everyone in the hospital to save Ellie, effectively becoming the ‘bad guys,’ or allow her sacrifice to potentially save humanity, making Joel a controversial figure. Joel’s ultimate decision is open to interpretation and sparks debate among players.

The Messenger

A Graphical Level Up

The Messenger is a fantastic indie game that lovingly recreates the feel of classic NES ninja games like Ninja Gaiden and Shadow of the Ninja. It’s a tough but engaging action platformer, made great by its vibrant pixel art, precise controls, and incredible soundtrack. The game has a surprising twist in the final battle: the environment shifts to a futuristic setting, altering both the graphics and the music.

It’s unusual for a game to completely change its style of play and visuals, and it’s hard to imagine a movie doing something similar. The movie Space Jam: A New Legacy, which switches between live-action and 2D animation, is probably the closest example to how the game The Messenger does this.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty

The Memes Of Raiden

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty surprised players with a twist. While the game was promoted with Solid Snake, the hero from previous installments, it wasn’t quite what people expected. The beginning of the game does let you play as Snake, but his role is brief. For most of the game, you control a new character named Raiden, a confident but inexperienced rookie.

He believes he’s as skilled as Snake because of the virtual reality training he experienced, which is a playful nod to gamers who sometimes feel like they have real-world expertise. The mission itself wasn’t what it seemed, as Raiden was being used as part of a larger scheme to create a super-soldier. The plot gets incredibly complex – involving even the President – and is too convoluted to fully explain here.

Red Dead Redemption

Don’t Worry, Father

Red Dead Redemption is a Western adventure where John, a former outlaw, works with the law to track down and eliminate the last of his old gang. The game generally sticks to classic Western tropes and the style Rockstar Games is known for, and that’s a good thing.

Just when everything seems resolved, John is shockingly betrayed and killed by those sworn to uphold the law. But the story doesn’t end there – the game jumps forward in time, and players take on the role of John’s son, Jack, who is driven to avenge his father’s death, offering a powerfully satisfying experience.

Silent Hill 2 (2024)

A Guilty Conscience

The original Silent Hill 2 is a classic horror game, and the 2024 remake adds more depth to its story. The game follows James, a man who returns to the town of Silent Hill searching for his deceased wife, Mary, after receiving a mysterious letter. He encounters other lost and confused people, and the entire experience feels unsettling and illogical.

The story can end in different ways, but the core truth remains: James came to Silent Hill because he felt responsible for his wife’s death – either through failing to care for her properly or by directly causing it. Until James can forgive himself, he’ll be trapped in Silent Hill, repeating the same events over and over.
