For gamers, earning a Platinum Trophy is one of the best feelings imaginable. It signifies completing absolutely everything a game has to offer – from beating the toughest levels to fully exploring the world and achieving all optional objectives. To many PlayStation players, it’s more than just an in-game achievement; it’s a testament to their commitment and skill.
It’s incredibly frustrating when a game’s most difficult achievement – earning the Platinum Trophy – becomes permanently unattainable. This isn’t about a challenge; it’s happening in games where online servers have shut down, or features needed for certain achievements no longer work. Players can complete everything else in the game, but one or two online-related trophies prevent them from ever getting the Platinum.
Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2
Servers Have Shut Down, Online Trophies Are Locked Forever

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 launched on PlayStation 3, it quickly became a hugely popular online shooter. The Big Leagues multiplayer mode, in particular, was incredibly influential and defined the series for many players. However, over time, the game’s online infrastructure began to fail.
Activision shut down the online servers for older Call of Duty games on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2023. This means it’s no longer possible to earn the Platinum trophy in Black Ops 2. It’s disappointing for fans who still enjoy the game’s futuristic world and exciting gameplay, especially its popular “Origins” Zombies map. Unfortunately, even fond memories can’t help players unlock that trophy now.
Battleborn
Full Game Shutdown Made Trophies Unobtainable

Battleborn was Gearbox Software’s early take on the hero shooter genre, before it became widely known. It mixed fast-paced first-person shooting with elements from MOBA games, allowing players to choose characters with distinct powers. When it first came out, it featured both a story-driven campaign and competitive online multiplayer.
Earning the Platinum Trophy in Battleborn required playing online and completing challenges that were constantly updated. When Gearbox announced they were shutting down the game’s servers, it meant the game was over for good. On January 31, 2021, the servers went offline permanently, making it impossible to unlock the last Trophy.
WWE 2K23
2K’s Shutdown Of Online Servers Ended All Access To Modes Tied To Trophies
Games like WWE 2K23 heavily rely on their online servers to function well. Players could compete in ranked matches, share custom wrestlers they created, and join online events. Many of these online features were essential for earning a Platinum trophy, a special achievement in the game.
When 2K announced it was shutting down the servers for the game in early 2025, players who collect trophies realized the Platinum trophy would soon be unattainable. While you can still play offline modes like career and exhibition games, these don’t include all the necessary requirements for unlocking every trophy. Trophies like “Online Veteran” and “Acknowledge Me” specifically need online matchmaking, which will no longer be available.
LittleBigPlanet Series
The Series’ Online Servers Are No More
The LittleBigPlanet series on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita was once known for its incredible creativity. Players loved building their own levels, sharing them with others online, and earning rewards for being part of the community. Unfortunately, Sony had to close the online servers for the older LittleBigPlanet games because of ongoing security and maintenance problems.
While you can still play LittleBigPlanet 3 by yourself, its online features—and the ability to earn Platinum trophies through them—are currently unavailable. A big part of what makes LittleBigPlanet enjoyable is discovering and playing levels created by other players, and without that, the game loses much of its appeal.
Portal 2
Server Issues
Portal 2 on PlayStation 3 was celebrated for its incredibly clever puzzle gameplay. Players used teleportation portals to solve challenging puzzles, and could play alone or with a friend online. However, unlocking certain achievements (trophies) in the online co-op mode was required to get everything out of the game.
As a big fan of Portal 2, it’s really disappointing that some of the coolest trophies are now impossible to get. Take “Professor Portal,” for example – it was awesome introducing a friend to the game and tackling the co-op challenges together. But since the online servers are gone, we can’t connect with other players anymore, making that trophy – and the Platinum, if you’re starting the game now – completely unattainable. You can still play through the whole story solo, but it feels like a part of the experience is missing.
Mad Max
Online Leaderboard System Disabled
When Avalanche Studios released Mad Max in 2015, it was a surprisingly successful game that didn’t get enough attention. Players could explore a barren, post-apocalyptic world, customize their vehicles, and battle bandits. For a long time, dedicated players could earn all of the game’s achievements with enough effort. However, the servers needed for its online features were eventually taken offline without much notice.
The issue stemmed from a trophy linked to the game’s online leaderboards and a system called “Scrap Crew.” These features relied on a server to record player progress and rewards. When the server went offline, the game could no longer update this information, preventing players from unlocking a necessary trophy and making it impossible to achieve the Platinum trophy.
Killzone: Shadow Fall
Multiplayer Servers Closed
Killzone: Shadow Fall was among the first games available for the PlayStation 4. It impressed players with its graphics and provided years of entertainment through its online multiplayer. Unfortunately, Guerrilla Games closed the online servers in August 2022, making several multiplayer-related trophies unattainable.
Players could earn the Platinum Trophy by getting kills, finishing challenges, and leveling up in online modes like Intercept. However, since those online servers are now shut down, it’s no longer possible to complete those requirements. While the single-player campaign is still playable, the Trophy list will unfortunately remain unfinished for many players.
Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron
With Servers Taken Down, Multiplayer Trophies That Require Co-Op Matches Can No Longer Be Earned
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron told the story of the Autobots and Decepticons during their final days on Cybertron, before the events on Earth. Players enjoyed a compelling single-player campaign, and the game also let you create and battle with custom Transformers online. Sadly, the online multiplayer features are no longer available.
As a big fan of Fall of Cybertron, I was really bummed when Activision shut down the online servers back in 2020. It completely killed the multiplayer, which was a lot of fun. The worst part? Several of the game’s trophies were tied to playing online – things like leveling up and winning matches. Now that the servers are gone, you just can’t earn those trophies anymore, which is super frustrating for collectors like me!
Humankind
Technical Issues
Humankind, created by Amplitude Studios, aimed to compete with the popular game Civilization by letting players guide different cultures across various eras. When it launched, it offered both single-player and online experiences, and included achievements for Steam and consoles. Unfortunately, some of these achievements stopped working correctly after game updates, and the removal of online features made others inaccessible.
Even though you can still play Humankind, some players who like to unlock everything are upset because certain trophies are impossible to get. This isn’t about the game being hard; it’s a technical problem preventing them from earning the Platinum trophy.
Friday The 13th: The Game
Locked Away Due To Legal Issues
Friday the 13th: The Game was a horror game focused on simple survival – players tried to escape and avoid being caught. While the indie game was popular for its fun, unpredictable multiplayer and genuinely creepy atmosphere, it ultimately failed not because of technical issues, but due to legal problems.
A disagreement over the licensing for Friday the 13th forced the game’s developers to stop updating and supporting it. This resulted in the game servers being shut down and online matchmaking being removed. With the servers officially going offline in December 2024, new players can no longer earn the Platinum Trophy. Many of the trophies required playing with others or completing tasks in multiplayer, which are now impossible. However, there’s hope for a new Friday The 13th: The Game in the future.
