Players often get very enthusiastic about games that let them personalize their experience. For some, being able to create a unique character is even more appealing than the gameplay or story itself. These days, most character creation tools offer similar options, like different hairstyles, colors, and clothing choices.
Some games offer incredibly extensive character customization, going far beyond what most players would even attempt. While variety is always welcome, today we’re highlighting the games with the most diverse and over-the-top customization options, including those that significantly alter the overall gameplay experience.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian Studios Puts a Big Emphasis On Customization
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a rich and complex role-playing game with a story that changes based on your choices, making it a game you’ll want to play again and again. You can create two unique characters from the beginning, with extensive customization options covering everything from their appearance and race to their skills and abilities.
What’s really unusual is that players can actually become one of the established characters, like Astarion, essentially playing the game from their perspective as a mostly silent lead. It’s rare for a game to let you directly control a character that was originally designed as a companion.
3D Dot Game Heroes
Choose Your Own Protagonist
3D Dot Game Heroes is a loving tribute to the original The Legend of Zelda on the NES, sharing a similar world map and dungeon design. What sets it apart is its unique visual style – everything is built out of colorful, blocky pixels, resembling LEGOs.
Players can customize their heroes by choosing from existing character models or building one from scratch. When the game first came out on PlayStation 3 in North America in 2010, players quickly started sharing creative—and often funny—designs, ranging from animals to characters like Cloud from Final Fantasy 7.
Saints Row 4
Talk Like A Zombie Day
In Saints Row 4, players can create a highly customizable gang leader, known as The Boss, who also becomes President. The character creation options are quite extensive, including sliders to adjust physical features. Notably, female characters can adjust their chest size, and male characters can modify their… well, let’s just say they have a lot of control over their anatomy, sometimes to ridiculous and impractical degrees.
One of the most entertaining features is the voice selection, which actually impacts how the story unfolds. You can even pick some unexpected voices – like Nolan North playing a version of himself, or, in the previous Saints Row: The Third game, sound like a brain-hungry zombie!
Elden Ring
No Matter Your Customization Choices, You Will Die
Elden Ring is a major success for FromSoftware, marking their first foray into open-world game design. Similar to their other challenging games, players customize their character’s appearance and choose a starting class. These classes provide initial equipment and abilities, but players have the freedom to develop their character in any direction – they aren’t locked into a specific playstyle.
Players can customize their characters by improving any skill as they progress, allowing for unique builds like a powerful warrior who also uses magic. You can experience the game solo or team up with up to two friends online, and immerse yourselves in its dark and challenging world.
LittleBigPlanet 2
Beyond Costumes
LittleBigPlanet 2 stood out from many games because it offered two distinct ways to play. The main story mode featured levels where players could earn costumes to customize their Sackboy characters, allowing for a lot of creative and unique designs.
The game offered lots of downloadable content, letting players dress up as characters from games like Final Fantasy 7 or DC Comics. LittleBigPlanet 2 also let players create their own games and levels – you could build traditional platforming challenges or something completely different, like a racing game viewed from above, or a classic arcade game.
Cyberpunk 2077
Customize Your Cyborg Body in a City Where Style Comes First
Like Saints Row 4, Cyberpunk 2077 lets you customize your character’s appearance, but with a more realistic and detailed approach. Beyond that, a really cool feature is the ability to change how much of a human your character remains as you install more cybernetic enhancements.
For the best experience, it’s great to play the game as someone embracing a full cyborg transformation – it unlocks tons of cool abilities, like spotting enemies from a distance and hacking into systems. Plus, you can really customize your character, V, with a huge selection of clothing and shop for the perfect look. It’s a well-executed cyberpunk fantasy set in a vast, open world.
Disgaea: Hour Of Darkness
An Endless RPG
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness was the original game in the Disgaea tactical RPG series, and it offered players a lot of ways to customize their experience. The updated version, Disgaea 1 Complete, takes this even further. While you can’t change the appearance of main characters like Laharl and Etna, you can customize how they grow and improve their abilities through weapon ranks and other options.
The game lets you build a team with diverse characters, each with unique skills and appearances – you can even recruit monsters! You can also endlessly improve your characters by reincarnating them and strengthening weapons in special dungeons, offering a huge range of possibilities and customization.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Hunt Your Way and In Style
In Monster Hunter Wilds, and throughout the Monster Hunter series, you have plenty of options when taking on monsters, whether for fun or to defend yourself. You can pick from fourteen different weapon types – like bows or insect glaives – and easily switch between them whenever you want during your adventure.
Players can craft new weapons and armor using items and monster parts they find while exploring. This crafting system will eventually allow them to customize the appearance of their gear. Plus, players can fully customize both their character and their Palico companion at any time, even before starting the game.
Skylanders: Imaginators
Diablo Babies
Skylanders: Imaginators was the final major installment in the Skylanders series, which let players bring toy figures to life in the game. What made it stand out was the ability to customize the appearance of those figures after bringing them into the game. Plus, this game included characters from the classic Crash Bandicoot series!
Players could customize their characters with almost any body part or visual change they wanted. Plus, like the game Diablo, it featured a constant stream of new gear to collect. This made it a great, accessible action RPG for people new to the genre, or for younger players.
The Sims 4
Customize Everything and Make the Sim You Want
The original Sims game let players explore all kinds of virtual lives, from raising a family to committing mischievous, or even sinister, acts. The Sims 4 continues this tradition, offering even greater freedom to create and experience the lives you imagine.
Let’s be clear, the game isn’t about violence! It’s more about the lighthearted fun of watching virtual people get into silly situations and speak in that made-up Simlish language. Beyond that, The Sims 4 offers endless possibilities – from designing characters and earning extra money, to building your dream home. With tons of expansion packs available, it’s truly the most customizable game out there.
