Games With The Most Unsettling Worlds

Many games begin with dark and unsettling scenarios. For example, in Resident Evil 2, players take on the role of Leon or Claire and immediately find themselves in a terrifying situation in Raccoon City. While this is a classic horror setup, other genres can be similar—Shin Megami Tensei 5, an RPG, quickly throws players into a horrific world after a brief introduction.

Many games, whether they’re horror titles or role-playing games, build suspense gradually. A game that slowly changes its world can be more disturbing than one that immediately tries to scare you. The following examples illustrate this point. Be aware that explaining these examples fully will require revealing some story spoilers.

So, there will be spoilers.

Silent Hill f

The Creeping Flowers

Let’s start with the horror game Silent Hill f, which really demonstrates this concept. Players take on the role of Hinako, a high school student in 1960s Japan, living in the small village of Ebisugaoka. When she ventures outside, she finds the town strangely quiet, yet superficially normal. Things take a dark turn when one of Hinako’s friends dies after being infected by a spreading, pink, plant-like parasite.

In the game, players will venture through the town of Ebisugaoka, battling monsters and discovering notes left by people who mysteriously left their lives behind. As the story unfolds, a plant-like parasite will increasingly take over the town, bringing with it more dangerous creatures. Throughout the game, the player character, Hinako, will visibly suffer the effects of the town’s curse – her clothing will become worn, and her mental state will deteriorate.

Persona 3 Reload

An Apathetic Disease

I’m so excited about Persona 3 Reload! It’s a complete remake of the original game, and it’s set in Japan where you play as a high school student who discovers a hidden world. Basically, there’s this secret hour after midnight – the Dark Hour – and only certain people can see it. As a player, you join a group of friends and explore this massive dungeon, Tartarus, trying to figure out why everyone else just turns into a coffin during the Dark Hour. It’s a really cool mystery!

The ongoing Dark Hour curse is making people lose their motivation and interest in life – things like love, food, and work just don’t seem appealing anymore. As the game progresses, you’ll notice more and more townspeople showing these symptoms, and locations will start to empty out, hinting at either a positive or negative change. The updated version of the game makes this effect more noticeable because modern consoles can display a larger number of characters simultaneously compared to the original PlayStation 2.

Bloodborne

Seeing Is Believing

Bloodborne is a dark and scary action game, similar to the Souls series, that immediately sets a chilling mood. Players take on the role of a Hunter, tasked with defeating monsters and attempting to rescue the trapped spirits within. Depending on your choices and how you play, you can actually save some of these lost souls.

The game features a stat called Insight that increases as players advance. As Insight levels up, players begin to uncover hidden truths. At maximum Insight, colossal monsters inspired by H.P. Lovecraft will appear, looming over the game world like powerful deities. Seeing these creatures for the first time is guaranteed to be a frightening experience, even for the most courageous players.

Final Fantasy 7

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meteor

Final Fantasy 7 creates a strong contrast in how players experience its world. The game begins in Midgar, a large city sharply divided between the poor, who live in slums, and the wealthy, who live comfortably above them. After leaving Midgar, players witness the environmental damage caused by the Shinra Corporation, contrasting with the more vibrant and natural landscapes found elsewhere in the world.

Around the middle of the game, things take a dark turn when the villain, Sephiroth, calls down a massive meteor threatening to destroy the world. At the same time, colossal creatures known as Weapons begin to wander the game’s landscape. Constantly seeing the impending doom in the sky, and the possibility of running into a gigantic monster, will likely make players feel anxious and overwhelmed.

Alan Wake 2

From Bright To Dark Falls

Alan Wake 2 unfolds across two different realities. Players also experience the story as Saga Anderson, an FBI agent investigating a murder in the eerie town of Bright Falls, Washington – the same location as the first game. As Saga delves deeper into the case, Bright Falls becomes increasingly disturbing, plagued by darkness, monsters, and a growing sense of corruption.

Alan Wake finds himself in a dark, New York-like city in another reality, relentlessly hunted by shadowy figures. As his grip on reality weakens, these shadows become increasingly dangerous. Players must unravel how this new story connects to the original, culminating in a shocking cliffhanger.

12 Minutes

Time Distortion

In the game 12 Minutes, you start as a man coming home to his wife, looking forward to a peaceful dinner. However, their evening is quickly disrupted by a police officer who insists on taking the wife away. When things go wrong, the player finds themselves reliving the same twelve minutes over and over again.

As the time loop continues, the game gets increasingly bizarre, revealing more about the characters’ relationship and the mysteries within the apartment. Players may occasionally find themselves confused about how to move forward, leading to a frustrating feeling of being stuck – almost like they’re caught in the loop themselves. Regardless of the choices made, the game’s ending isn’t a cheerful one.

.hack//Infection

Data Loss

This example is unique because it uses four games to demonstrate how the story evolves. It begins with .hack//Infection, where the main character, Kite, receives a mysterious item within a virtual reality game called The World. A strange computer error in the game is causing players to fall into comas in real life.

Kite has a special ability, the Twilight Bracelet, which lets him fix enemies that are glitched or corrupted, making them easier to fight. As the series of interconnected games progresses, the virtual world becomes increasingly flawed, leading to more corrupted enemies and fewer players in central areas. The final game, .hack//Quarantine, really highlights how unsettling it is to play an MMO that feels almost empty. It’s a powerful experience. It’s a shame more people couldn’t enjoy this fantastic four-game series today – a remastered collection would be amazing.
