Gamescom Expected to Break More Records This Year

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that this year’s Gamescom is shaping up to be the mother of all gaming events. The records already broken by this year’s event are simply mind-boggling, and it’s not hard to imagine more records being set as the doors open.

The much-anticipated Gamescom event is just a stone’s throw away! Kicking off with Opening Night Live, hosted by Geoff Keighley on August 20, it will be followed by an entire week filled with gaming updates, both in-person and online activities, and much more. What makes this year even more exciting is that it signifies the 15th anniversary of Gamescom. Over the years, the brand has expanded to include Gamescom Asia and Gamescom LATAM. The event has already shattered several records and is predicted to break even more once the festivities begin.

Game Rant recently sat down with the managing editor of the German Games Industry Association called Game, Felix Falk, with Game being the brand owner and co-organizer of Gamescom. During our talk, Falk discussed all the records that Gamescom this year has already broken – even before opening its doors. For example, this year’s event will feature 48 pavilions from 37 countries, representing a new record from last year’s 33 pavilions from across 26 different countries. There are also more than 1400 exhibitors this year, which is a big leap from last year and yet another new record.

Gamescom 2024 Has Already Broken Records

When asked what past experience has led him to believe about this year’s Gamescom, Falk said,

It’s truly amazing to anticipate breaking previous records this time around. We’ve already surpassed the old one – we’re expecting over 1400 exhibitors, which is significantly more than we had last year and a brand-new high mark for us.

After setting some impressive milestones, it’s reasonable to anticipate that additional records could be surpassed. Whether this record encompasses attendance or not is yet uncertain, as the previous record was approximately 370,000 attendees in 2019. Last year saw a close contender with around 320,000 participants. However, it’s worth noting that even Gamescom’s convention center has its capacity limits, and exceeding this number isn’t necessarily the aim. Instead, the association focuses on what these objectives achieve. For instance, thanks to Gamescom Asia and Gamescom LATAM, the Gamescom brand is becoming more recognized globally, attracting developers from around the world. Furthermore, efforts towards diversity, as well as other crucial aspects of Gamescom like accessibility and sustainability, are all made possible by the worldwide recognition that Gamescom receives.

As a passionate gamer, I was eager to hear Falk’s perspective on what gamers might anticipate from the show given it’s primarily about games and camaraderie. It’s crucial for even the most meticulously planned events to align with audience expectations to avoid any sense of disappointment. Falk, however, exuded confidence not only in Opening Night Live but also in all the exciting content we can look forward to from Gamescom this year, such as Gamescom Studio and Gamescom Awesome Indies. In particular, he mentioned that he’s optimistic about the overall experience gamers will have at Gamescom this year.

I believe that this year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live will be an outstanding event, hosted on location. We’ve increased the number of attendees significantly, creating a vibrant environment with a large crowd filling up an incredibly vast auditorium. Additionally, I’ve been told by Geoff that content-wise, it promises to be exceptional… Unlike some one-time digital events, this is the start of a week-long celebration of games and video game content. Whether you’re in Cologne or joining online through platforms like Gamescom Studio, Gamescom Awesome Indies, or numerous others, you won’t want to miss it!

Overall, our conversation about Gamescom this year concluded optimistically, signaling a promising fall season and an exciting year for gaming in 2025. To summarize Falk’s thoughts, he expressed his belief that the industry is poised for a successful year, stating, “I believe it will be a good year, and I consider it a positive indicator that, following those challenging times for the industry, Gamescom serves as a beacon of better days ahead. We are presenting the games that will reinvigorate our industry once more, helping us transition out of our current phase and into a more prosperous period.”

Gamescom Opening Night Live takes place on August 20 at 11 am PT/2 pm ET.
