GameStop Accidentally Sends Customer Super Expensive GameCube Game

Highlights

  • GameStop accidentally sent a customer a rare GameCube game instead of Sonic.
  • The customer was sent a copy of Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, which is significantly more expensive than the Sonic game.

As a long-time gamer and frequent online shopper at GameStop, I can’t help but feel both amused and frustrated by the recent incident where a customer received Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness instead of Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut. While it may seem like a lucky break for the TikToker who discovered this mistake, the reality is that such mishaps can lead to significant financial implications for both the retailer and the customer.

As a dedicated gamer and longtime customer of GameStop, I was excitedly anticipating the arrival of Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut at my doorstep. However, to my surprise and disappointment, I received a copy of Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness instead. It seems that there was an unfortunate mix-up in their order fulfillment process. Despite the growing trend towards digital releases, which has dealt a significant blow to GameStop, they still maintain numerous physical stores across the US. While most GameStop locations prioritize newer games, their online storefront offers a vast selection of retro titles for those of us with nostalgic tendencies.

Purchasing video games online comes with some level of risk. For instance, GameStop has been reported to send customers incomplete game packages without proper box art. On the other hand, retailers like Walmart have been found to deliver games in their original plastic casings, which can be inconvenient for consumers. However, buying video games online can also result in pleasant surprises, such as receiving a more expensive game unintentionally, as recently experienced by a TikToker when they were sent an expensive GameCube game instead of the less costly one they had ordered.

A TikTok user named madisonhasaproblem recently shared a video of their GameStop receipt. They spent $28.49 on “Sonic Adventure 2: Battle” and $17.09 on “Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut.” However, when they opened the box for “Sonic Adventure DX,” they didn’t find the game but instead discovered an envelope containing “Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness,” a GameCube title. This game is currently unavailable on GameStop’s website, and its listed price is $99.99. On eBay, it sells for around $150 to $200. If this wasn’t a setup, the TikToker received an unexpectedly valuable upgrade.

The cost of used video games, including those for the GameCube console, has significantly increased in the past few years, with prices becoming even more inflated during the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, titles designed for the GameCube are currently being sold at exorbitant prices online. One such game is Pokemon XD, which now comes with a hefty price tag.

In addition to other Pokemon games for GameCube, Pokemon Box: Ruby & Sapphire is particularly costly. On eBay, this elusive GameCube title sells for substantial amounts of money, often reaching thousands of dollars. Imagine the surprise when someone stumbled upon an owned copy in their very own closet!
