As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I’m keeping a close eye on the latest developments with GameStop. It seems they’ve recently declared their plans to sell off their operations in France and Canada. If these plans materialize, it could further reduce GameStop’s footprint globally, as they’ve already been shuttering stores across the world over the past few months.
Apart from being America’s biggest video game retailer, GameStop is also one of the oldest, having started its operations as early as 1980. However, despite its past prosperity, the shift towards digital media in the industry, coupled with the challenging years during and following the COVID-19 pandemic, appears to have had a predominantly negative impact on the company. Current forecasts suggest a rather grim outlook for GameStop.
Currently, GameStop has expressed plans to sell off its retail operations in France and Canada, which respectively had 332 and 203 stores by February 2024. If these sales go through, GameStop’s presence would significantly decrease in countries other than the U.S., as it also operates in Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and other regions. However, it is worth noting that this decision has not been finalized, as no official buyer has been announced, leaving room for potential changes of heart by the company. This move follows a recent trend set by GameStop’s withdrawal from Germany last year and its exit from Ireland before that.
GameStop Could Shut Down in France and Canada
In recent times, it has been noticed that not even the U.S., home to most GameStop outlets, has entirely escaped the wave of physical stores closing down. As early as January, numerous GameStop stores in the U.S. were covertly closed, leaving many regular patrons disheartened. Currently, about 2,000 stores continue operation within the country, but it’s uncertain how long they will manage to stay open.
Despite a challenging outlook for GameStop’s brick-and-mortar stores, they are still engaging their customers through online deals. For instance, GameStop recently unveiled a ‘Buy 2 Get 1 Free’ promotion for PlayStation 4 games this week. In total, there are over 1,600 games to pick from, allowing customers to buy three pre-owned PS4 games online and enjoy the lowest-priced one at no cost. Some well-known titles like ‘God of War’ (2018), ‘Grand Theft Auto V’, ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’, and ‘Uncharted 4: Thief’s End’ are part of this offer. Let’s hope GameStop manages to sustain its stores and bring more deals for gamers, but we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for the well-known video game retailer.
