GameStop Has Absurd Trade-In Value for Extremely Rare and Valuable Magic: The Gathering Card

Highlights

  • GameStop undervalues rare Magic: The Gathering card “The One Ring” at three dollars, causing shock among fans.
  • Players can buy “The One Ring” card for $95-$100, but GameStop offers a low trade-in value of only three dollars.

As a long-time Magic: The Gathering (MTG) fan and collector, I was utterly shocked to learn that GameStop undervalued the extremely rare “The One Ring” card from the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set. I’ve been following the MTG market for years, and I know how valuable this card is – not just because it’s a rare piece from the collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Lord of the Rings, but also because of its rich history within the game community.

GameStop valued a scarcely found “Magic: The Gathering” card from the “The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth” collection, which was launched in June 2023, at an unexpectedly low price of three dollars. However, this card’s genuine worth is significantly more than that.

Magic: The Gathering, a collectible card game that can be played on tables or digitally, was introduced in 1993 with its inaugural Alpha set. Since then, this game has gained immense popularity and has partnered with renowned franchises such as Dungeons & Dragons, Transformers, and Fallout. The rarest Magic: The Gathering cards have fetched millions of dollars at auction, while others remain affordable but still provide a decent income for enthusiasts. GameStop enables players to buy and sell their PSA-graded Magic: The Gathering cards via a trade-in program. However, the store might not always provide the most generous value for an exceptionally rare card.

Reddit user Knarz97 posted a picture of GameStop’s trade-in deal for the “The One Ring” card from the Tales of Middle-earth set, which is part of the Magic: The Gathering – Lord of the Rings collaboration. This card is renowned for its rarity and high value, but GameStop appraised it at just $3 for trade-in. Many Magic: The Gathering enthusiasts were taken aback by this seemingly unreasonable offer. One user quipped, “An offer you can’t refuse,” while another playfully remarked, “GameStop keeps being GameStop.” In contrast, on TCG Player, a Near Mint Foil version of “The One Ring” can be sold for up to $138, but it can also be purchased for around $95 to $100, depending on its condition.

GameStop Values Extremely Rare Magic: The Gathering Card for Under Five Dollars

“The One Ring” is a highly coveted Magic: The Gathering card that gained notoriety in August 2023 when singer Post Malone spent $2.6 million on a unique version of it. This particular copy was special because it was printed in Black Speech, a made-up language from The Lord of the Rings series. However, even without the Black Speech printing, “The One Ring” typically fetches over $100 in Magic: The Gathering communities and markets. GameStop’s online estimation may vary after a physical appraisal, allowing players to potentially sell their “One Ring” copies for more reasonable prices upon evaluation in-store.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but be thrilled about the enduring popularity of Magic: The Gathering. This game never fails to surprise us with exciting collaborations, like the recent crossover with Assassin’s Creed, which introduced some of their most iconic characters and gave the series a significant boost just before the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. To make things even more intriguing, Wizards of the Coast recently announced that John Hight, former general manager of Warcraft, would be joining their team to head up both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. With his focus on creating “new storytelling tabletop and digital experiences,” I’m eagerly anticipating more groundbreaking developments for Magic: The Gathering in the future.
