GameStop is Silently Shutting Down More US Stores

As a dedicated fan since 2020, I’ve noticed that GameStop has been closing stores in the U.S. at an alarming rate – over 1000 to be exact. And as we step into 2025, it seems they’re continuing their quiet retreat, shuttering more locations without much fanfare.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed a growing murmur on social media and forums like Reddit about recent layoffs and store closures at GameStop that haven’t been officially acknowledged. It seems like they’re trying to keep things hush-hush, but the online gaming community is pretty good at uncovering secrets.

More Closures

Back in December, I found myself shocked when GameStop closed down 300 stores all over North America. To make matters worse, it also decided to pull the plug on Game Informer, a publication that had been around for an impressive 30 years. This decision left gamers worldwide, including me, disheartened.

The corporation, however, seemed unfazed by the outrage this move sparked and even went as far as deleting the heartfelt farewell messages from Game Informer that were penned shortly after their announcement.

Over the past several days on Reddit, numerous posts have emerged from unhappy workers who’ve been let go from GameStop. It appears that the company hasn’t made any significant efforts to pacify their employees, as they’ve declined to issue even a brief statement acknowledging the multiple store closures happening nationwide.

The latest post in the GameStop subreddit begins, ‘With a heavy heart, goodbye.’ Another user shared that their long-time favorite GameStop store, which they’ve visited for 20 years, has unexpectedly shut down. They commented, ‘You deserve better conditions.’

In the report, PSLS verified that both severance deals and job transfers are being proposed, however, only the severance option applies to full-time workers such as managers. For part-time GameStop employees, it appears the only option is a transfer. Unfortunately, with the current direction of the company, there may not be many stores available for transfer in the near future.
