GameStop announced on social media that anyone caught using a scale to weigh Pokémon card packs in their stores will be permanently banned. While some Pokémon fans applauded GameStop for trying to stop scalpers, others criticized the company’s own pricing on Pokémon cards.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been well-known that the Pokemon Trading Card Game has been a major target for people looking to resell items at inflated prices, leading to empty shelves and high prices online. The cards have also attracted thieves hoping to steal rare and valuable cards. Even Tom Brady, the former NFL quarterback, was a victim, with nearly $10,000 worth of Pokemon and baseball cards stolen from his CardVault shop in New York City shortly after it opened. The New York Police Department was actively investigating the theft at the time this was written.
GameStop Calls Out Pokemon TCG Scalpers
Retailers like Walmart have been limiting purchases of Pokémon trading card game (TCG) products to stop people from buying them just to resell at higher prices. Recently, GameStop made a surprising announcement on X (formerly Twitter). They said they will permanently ban anyone caught using a scale in their stores to weigh card packs – a tactic some resellers use to guess which packs contain the most valuable cards. GameStop shared a video of someone doing this with One Piece card packs as an example. Some shoppers feel this strict policy is a reasonable step, given that other stores are already limiting how many packs people can buy.
One user suggested that GameStop stores would need security to handle customer bans. However, some customers pointed out that GameStop wasn’t consistently applying its policies, sharing photos of varying prices for Pokemon TCG booster boxes across different stores – some were still marked up above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Even with Black Friday sales happening at GameStop stores nationwide, Pokemon TCG products weren’t included in the discounts.
Pokemon TCG collectors will soon have a chance to trade in their cards for credit at GameStop, with a special event happening on December 6th. It remains to be seen how well this event will prevent people from buying cards just to resell them at a higher price.
