Gearbox CEO Teases Borderlands 4

Gearbox CEO Teases Borderlands 4

Highlights

  • Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford teased Borderlands 4 while reflecting on the terrible reception of the newly premiered Borderlands movie.
  • Pitchford said he’s “super flattered” that the series fans apparently like the games more than a movie made by some of the “biggest and best” filmmakers and actors on the planet.

As a dedicated Borderlands fan with over a decade of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of satisfaction seeing Randy Pitchford tease us with the news about Borderlands 4. It’s like he’s throwing us a bone, trying to distract us from the disaster that was the Borderlands movie.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that our team at Gearbox Software is tirelessly working away on what’s shaping up to be an epic continuation – Borderlands 4! This tidbit slipped out during my contemplations about the freshly released Borderlands movie and its less-than-stellar response.

It was announced towards the end of March 2024 that Borderlands 4 is being developed. This revelation came alongside Take-Two Interactive’s news about acquiring Gearbox Software for $460 million from Embracer Group.

Gearbox CEO Teases Borderlands 4, Says He’s ‘Super Flattered’ With Poor Movie Reception

Approximately four months later, Lionsgate’s Borderlands film was released, but it received poor reviews from critics. Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, recently expressed his feelings about this on Twitter, stating that he was “very complimented” to discover that fans of the series apparently prefer the games more than the work done by some of the most talented actors and filmmakers in the world. He ended his positive thoughts by assuring fans that they are putting in extra effort for what’s coming next, which is a hint towards the fourth installment of the popular franchise. The misspelled preposition “for” was intentionally used in this statement.

Some people matched Pitchford’s optimism with equal enthusiasm, but others seized his tweet as an occasion to lament the transformation of the Borderlands movie into what they deem a run-of-the-mill PG-13 action comedy, instead of something that aligns with the series’ fanbase. This critique is echoed by numerous fans ever since the film’s release, which sheds light on why the Borderlands movie garnered an unusual 0% average rating on Rotten Tomatoes, despite additional reviews boosting its score to a modest 10%. The poor reception has also been reflected in early box office figures, as the film earned less than $10 million domestically against a production budget of $120 million.

Despite a disappointing response from critics and poor box office performance of the latest movie installment, it doesn’t mean that fans have lost their enthusiasm for the upcoming Borderlands game. In fact, as indicated by Google Trends data, global searches for “Borderlands 4” have significantly increased by over three times in August 2024 compared to the previous month.

Borderlands 4 May Still Be Years Away From Release

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but get excited about Take-Two’s March 2024 announcement of the upcoming Borderlands 4 installment. However, they didn’t disclose when exactly they started working on this project during the production phase, considering that AAA games typically take at least five years to develop nowadays. Consequently, it seems that we might have to wait a few more years before we can get our hands on Borderlands 4. Moreover, based on Gearbox and 2K’s previous marketing patterns, it appears that the game may still be over a year away from release since they haven’t revealed anything about it yet.
