As a seasoned gamer with over a decade of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the return to the Locust War is always a welcome one. The upcoming Gears of War: E-Day promises an immersive journey back to the beginning of the invasion on Sera, and I’m excited to once again take up arms alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. However, it’s important not to forget the past, and in this case, that means revisiting Gears of War: Judgment.

Many enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the return to the Locust Conflict in the forthcoming title, “Gears of War: E-Day“. This game is positioned at the onset of the Locust uprising on the planet Sera, where gamers can assume roles as beloved characters Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, immersing themselves for the first time in the terrors of the Locust. Interestingly, “Gears of War: E-Day” isn’t the initial third-person shooter from the Gears of War series that takes place near the start of the Locust War. That honor goes to “Gears of War: Judgment“, a game which could benefit from a remaster to broaden newcomers’ understanding of the early days of the Locust War, complementing their experience with “Gears of War: E-Day“.

Gears of War: Judgment Explained

Initially launched in 2013, serving as both the last “Gears of War” game for the Xbox 360 and the first spin-off title, “Gears of War: Judgment” was developed partially by Epic Games, its original creator. As per Cliff Bleszinski, then design director at Epic Games, the game unfolds several months after Emergence Day, with the Coalition of Ordered Governments trying to protect Halvo Bay from a Locust assault led by General Karn. Breaking away from series tradition, players in this installment take control of Damon Baird, a sarcastic lieutenant and former leader of Kilo Squad, instead of Marcus Fenix as the main character.

In its gameplay mechanics, Gear of War: Judgment closely resembles the campaign mode of Gears of War 3, enabling up to four players to team up in online cooperative play as characters Baird, Augustus Cole, and newcomers Sofia Hendrik and Garron Paduk. Notably, each level presents optional declassified mission objectives that can make the levels tougher, as they limit available ammunition, weapons, impose time constraints, and so on. As you progress through the game, these declassified missions also offer additional insights into Kilo Squad’s trial. Most of the game is a narrative told in flashbacks from each squad member during their trial.

Gears of War: Judgment’s Franchise Influence

As a devoted Gears of War enthusiast, I found myself immersed in the rich backstory that the prequel, Judgment, provided. This game served as an essential source of information that was later referenced in subsequent titles like Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. For many fans, Judgment marked our initial encounter with the Union of Independent Republics (UIR), thanks to Paduk’s former UIR soldier background and his frequent use of UIR weapons such as the markza and booshka. The UIR engaged in a prolonged conflict with the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) during the Pendulum Wars, a near 80-year-long struggle that ended just days before E-Day. Moreover, Judgment offered an additional brief campaign titled Aftermath, which shed light on how Baird and Cole managed to secure UIR reinforcements at the end of Gears of War 3.

In Gears of War: Judgment, I find myself wielding a chainsaw lancer that technically shouldn’t exist during the game’s timeline. This bad boy is supposed to have been made a year after the events of Judgment, but hey, who am I to question the game developers? It’s just another fun twist in this gripping war saga!

The Potential of a Gears of War: Judgment Remaster

In the upcoming game “Gears of War: E-Day“, as suggested by The Coalition Creative Director Matt Searcy, a remake of “Judgment” could provide insights into events preceding Emergence Day. If the storyline extends that far in the “Gears of War” timeline, players may witness an event where Baird rescues Fenix, which occurred when Fenix was part of Omega Squad during “Judgment“. Depending on how the game unfolds, this rescue operation could be shown from Fenix’s perspective in “E-Day“. However, it is unlikely that Baird and Cole will appear directly in “E-Day‘s campaign. A remake of “Judgment” could offer players a glimpse into what Delta Squad was doing during this period in Sera’s history.

As a die-hard Gears of War fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the possibility of a Gears of War: Judgment remaster being part of the rumored Marcus Fenix Collection. This hypothetical collection is said to be a compilation of all mainline Gears of War games, similar to Halo: The Master Chief Collection. However, if the Marcus Fenix Collection never materializes or if it’s not released before E-Day’s debut, The Coalition might consider including Judgment’s campaign remaster as downloadable content for Gears of War: E-Day, perhaps as a pre-order bonus or part of a season pass akin to the Assassin’s Creed 3 remaster in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s season pass.
