The Coalition recently shared some encouraging news about Gears of War: E-Day, calling it their biggest project yet. Although they haven’t announced when the game will be released, it looks like fans can expect it in 2026.
The popular Gears of War series, which began in 2006, continues to be a major Xbox franchise. Players take on the role of soldiers battling the Locust, a race of parasitic creatures, using guns and even chainsaws. With five main games and several spin-offs, Gears of War is a long-standing favorite. Although a direct sequel to 2019’s Gears 5 hasn’t been announced, a new prequel called Gears of War: E-Day, focusing on the characters Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, is in development. Originally announced in 2024 with a planned 2026 release, the development team recently shared some updates on the highly anticipated game.
Gears of War: E-Day to “Play Like Gears, But Play Like New”, Says Developers
Xbox recently published a year-end article featuring updates from the teams working on highly anticipated 2025 games, such as The Outer Worlds 2 and South of Midnight, and their plans for 2026. Mike Crump, Studio Head at The Coalition – the team behind Gears of War: Reloaded – shared his thoughts on what the studio is most excited about for the coming year.
As a huge Gears fan, I was so excited to hear the news! Next year is the 20th anniversary of the series, and the team is celebrating with a brand new game called Gears of War: E-Day. Apparently, it’s their most ambitious project yet – completely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. What’s really cool is that it’s a return to the very beginning, showing Marcus and Dom facing the Locust for the first time. They’re saying it’s the perfect starting point for anyone new to Gears, and honestly, I can’t wait to learn more next year!
Gears of War: E-Day is currently scheduled to come out around 2026. We haven’t seen any new gameplay footage or trailers since 2024, but the developers at The Coalition and People Can Fly are confident it will be a great game. Considering how ambitious Gears 5 was, E-Day could be exactly what fans are hoping for.
So, The Coalition is saying Gears of War: E-Day is coming… that’s a big promise! I’m really curious to see if they can pull it off.
