The Coalition, the developer of Gears of War: E-Day, has revealed that the entire game will be set within the city of Kalona. This focused setting allows players to deeply experience the intense struggle Marcus and Dom face against the Locust Horde. For fans of the Gears of War series, E-Day is a crucial event in the game’s history, and this new prequel will finally let players witness firsthand the events of Sera’s darkest day.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Gears of War series, and it’s amazing to see how popular it remains. The original game is set 14 years after a pivotal event called E-Day, and the upcoming game promises to finally show us what happened during that crucial moment – something both exciting and unsettling. Gears of War already explores the difficult realities of war and its impact on individuals, but the new prequel seems likely to delve even further into these themes. Focusing the story on the city of Kalona feels like a smart choice, and suggests that Gears of War: E-Day might also have strong horror elements.
Gears of War: E-Day’s Kalona Setting Puts the Horror of Fighting the Locusts Front and Center
E-Day dramatically impacted the entire planet Sera, and certain locations became central to the Locust invasion. Kalona was particularly significant, being one of the first cities overrun. The upcoming game, Gears of War: E-Day, promises to be the darkest installment in the series, showcasing the most devastating civilian casualties and intense fear. While many specifics are still secret, The Coalition’s creative director, Matt Searcy, has shared that setting the game in Kalona will deliver a uniquely harrowing experience for players.
Kalona Teases Claustrophobic Immersion
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, The Coalition’s Shannon Searcy explained the team’s approach to building the city of Kalona in Gears of War: E-Day. The story unfolds over a few days to help players truly connect with the location and understand what’s been lost – its history, its people, and their way of life. This immersion is key to making the tragic events of the game resonate with players. The game follows Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, and Searcy emphasized that the story will reveal how the hardships of E-Day and the years that followed profoundly shaped these already experienced soldiers, explaining why they became the hardened characters fans know and love.
Image via The Coalition Gears of War: E-Day will tackle incredibly difficult and frightening scenarios, like watching people fail to rescue those caught in a disaster and facing the overwhelming despair of war. While the Gears of War series takes place in a science fiction setting, it explores the very real horrors of conflict and widespread tragedy, mirroring the feeling of an unstoppable catastrophe.
Gears of War: E-Day’s Linear Story Will Show Kalona Deteriorate Right Before Players’ Eyes
It’s really interesting that Searcy said the story happens over several days in a row. This means players will witness Kalona’s downfall as it actually happens. With each passing day, more people will die and the city will decay further. The destruction will keep happening, and Marcus and Dom are powerless to prevent it. The close relationship between Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago is a key part of the series, and learning the heartbreaking reasons behind their strong connection is sure to be a very emotional experience for players.
The way the city changes throughout the story of Gears of War: E-Day promises some of the most intense and surprising moments the series has ever seen. The game’s setting has the potential to deliver the emotional impact the franchise has been building towards, as each installment has gotten closer to truly resonating with players on a deeper level. E-Day provides even richer opportunities to achieve that emotional connection.
We want people to truly understand what’s been lost – the stories, the community, and the everyday lives of those who were here.
Voice actors John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro will be reprising their roles as Marcus and Dom.
The Next Gears of War Chapter Hopefully Remains On Schedule For Its 2026 Launch
- Right now, Gears of War: E-Day does not have an official release date besides a 2026 window.
- Marcus Fenix will be the main, and potentially only, playable character.
- The campaign length is unknown at this moment.
- Multiplayer has yet to be officially confirmed by The Coalition.
I was really hoping to see Gears of War: E-Day at the Xbox showcase! I was excited for Fable and Forza Horizon 6, don’t get me wrong, but it was a bit of a bummer that E-Day wasn’t there. From what I understand, the game is still planned to come out in 2026, and I’m really hoping that stays true. 2026 is the 20th anniversary of Gears of War, and it would be a huge disappointment if the prequel got pushed to 2027!
Image via The Coalition I was a little bummed not to see Gears of War: E-Day at the Xbox showcase, but I’m still optimistic! There’s plenty of time left this year, with Summer Game Fest and another Xbox showcase likely coming up. It feels like 2026 is already going to be huge for gaming, and I really think Gears of War: E-Day will be a fantastic game to add to the mix. I’m hoping we’ll get some news soon!
