For approximately 19 years now, gaming enthusiasts worldwide on both Xbox and PC platforms have been captivated by the innovative third-person gameplay, compelling narratives, and memorable characters of the Gears of War series. Making its debut as an exclusive for the Xbox 360 in late 2006, the Gears of War franchise has grown to be one of Xbox’s most renowned IPs alongside other acclaimed Xbox franchises like Halo, Forza, and Fable. Originally created by Epic Games, developers behind Fortnite, and later led by The Coalition within Xbox Game Studios, Gears of War has continued to resonate for two decades due to its expanding lore and gameplay features.
Although the Gears of War series has seen fewer releases in recent years compared to its initial period the last release, Gears Tactics, came out five years ago the dedicated fan base for this franchise remains active, anticipating the next game, book, and upcoming movie. The forthcoming launch of Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation consoles may also attract new fans to the series. As the anticipated release of Gears of War: E-Day, slated for 2026 as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary, approaches, it is an opportune time to evaluate and rank each Gears of War game based on its narrative and gameplay elements.
S-Tier Gears of War Games
- Gears of War 2
- Gears of War 3
- Gears 5
In simpler terms, the most outstanding “Gears of War” games are those that strike a perfect chord by offering an immersive single-player campaign, multiplayer modes that are hard to tear yourself away from, and unique offline features that creatively enhance elements from previous “Gears” installments. This is best demonstrated by “Gears of War 2,” which significantly enhanced virtually everything that made the first game excellent. In fact, “Gears of War 2” might still possess the best campaign in the entire series due to emotional character developments involving Dominic Santiago, exciting battles against a more formidable Locust Horde, and intriguing additions to the established storyline. Notably, “Gears of War 2” introduced the pioneering PVE Horde Mode, where up to five players could battle endless waves of Locust and Sire troops, inspiring numerous other games to adopt a similar concept.
Gears of War 3 expanded on the progress made by its predecessor by offering a campaign that brought a satisfying conclusion to the Locust War, an upgraded Horde 2.0 that is often praised as the best version of the mode, and enhanced PVP multiplayer gameplay. Additionally, it was the first installment in the series to offer downloadable content, specifically the campaign Gears of War 3: RAAM’s Shadow, which delved into the stories of beloved side characters and enabled players to control the fearsome Locust General RAAM.
Although the main campaign of “Gears 5” didn’t receive as widespread acclaim as “Gears of War 2” or “3”, its PVP multiplayer and Horde 4.0 significantly enhanced the multiplayer aspects compared to “Gears of War 4”. Furthermore, it introduced the captivating DLC campaign known as “Gears 5: Hivebusters”.
A-Tier Gears of War Games
- Gears of War 1
- Gears of War: Ultimate Edition
- Gears of War 4
The games in the middle of the Gears of War series are those that were created by their respective developers for the first time. While Gears of War 1 had a significant impact on Xbox and third-person games as a whole, it may not hold up as well compared to its later versions due to limited gameplay variety, enemy diversity, and multiplayer features. This can also be said about the initial remaster of Gears of War 1 and the first Gears game developed by The Coalition, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. However, Ultimate Edition does offer a few more enjoyable elements than its predecessor, such as five previously PC-exclusive single-player chapters and digital copies of Wildstorm and DC Comics’ Gears of War comic series.
The initial exclusive Gears series title from the Coalition, Gears of War 4, served as a decent return to the devastated planet Sera after the acclaimed ending of Gears of War 3’s campaign. However, the majority of Gears of War 4’s campaign centers around battling less captivating DeeBee robots rather than the more terrifying and gameplay-varied Swarm. Moreover, Gears of War 4’s Horde 3.0 only featured DeeBees and Swarm as adversaries, making it the only version of Horde that lacked any Locust presence at all. To add to this, Gears of War 4’s multiplayer was devoid of popular game modes like Beast mode. Nevertheless, the game’s more horror-oriented campaign, additional insights into COG, UIR, and Locust backstory, and introduction of new weapons made it an enjoyable experience overall.
B-Tier Gears of War Games
- Gears of War: Judgment
- Gears Pop!
- Gears Tactics
Judgment, though not a poor game on its own, was criticized for its self-contained mission design focused on scoring and shorter campaign duration. Moreover, Judgment was the first Gears game to exclude playable Locust or other species in standard multiplayer PVP battles, and it lacked Horde Mode, a feature present since Gears of War 2. Instead, Judgment introduced OverRun and Survival modes, which while entertaining, were considered poor alternatives to Horde or Beast modes.
It’s no surprise that, given its age, the Gears of War franchise would branch out from its traditional third-person gameplay into other genres. The initial foray into new territories was arguably the least successful Gears game to date – the 2019 mobile real-time strategy game, Gears Pop!. Based on Funko’s popular bobbleheads, Gears Pop! represented a significant departure from the franchise’s usual realistic and intense aesthetics, which didn’t appeal to many players. Consequently, Gears Pop! was closed down in 2021 due to low player numbers. On the other hand, Gears Tactics maintained the franchise’s classic visual style and themes but focused on the less popular turn-based tactics gameplay.
