This article contains major spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
The original Jujutsu Kaisen manga finished in 2024, which was disappointing for many readers, as some felt the ending was too fast. Luckily, the creator, Gege Akutami, has released a new manga called Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo – a sequel to the original series. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo takes place 68 years after the fight with Sukuna and introduces a fresh cast of characters, generating a lot of excitement among fans.
Even though Jujutsu Kaisen has moved forward in time, the world remains incredibly dangerous. Creator Gege Akutami isn’t afraid to kill off characters – as seen in JJK, and now in Modulo. In chapter 12 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, Akutami shockingly killed off Cross in a brutal way. Cross, brother of Maru, was shot and killed by a human, and this event is escalating the conflict between humans and cursed spirits.
Cross Was Shot In The Heart In Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo introduces a lot of compelling new characters, but the twin brothers, Maru and Cross, are particularly noteworthy. Both are members of the Simurian race and hail from the Rumelian tribe. While Maru has played a larger role in the story so far, Cross is also a fascinating character.
Things seem to be getting complicated for Cross. After a relatively peaceful period following the events of Modulo Chapter 11, Chapter 12 is bringing a lot more heat. I recently observed Cross, along with other Rumelians, attempting to de-escalate rising tensions between humans and Rumelians within the Great Tokyo Exorcism Zone. Apparently, this Exorcism is a big deal in Tokyo – it happens every two years. The sorcerers created it as a way to keep spirits contained in a specific area and stop them from spreading throughout the city.
The Rumelians have confused their sacred animal gods, the Kalyans, with evil spirits because they share some similar traits. This misunderstanding has deeply upset them and prompted them to act. The Kalyans are actually revered by the Rumelians, and the people feel genuine pain when a Kalyan dies – they experience it as tears from a third eye, and can even suffer physical harm as a result.
Just when things seemed to be calming down after the recent events and the misunderstanding between Rumelians and humans was fading, the author, Gege, surprised readers with a shocking moment: a sorcerer shot Cross in the chest. This sorcerer is named Yakumaru, and he’s a new character that most fans aren’t familiar with.
Cross’s Could Still Be Healed But The Chances Are Low
Image from Manga Plus Cross is likely fatally wounded. He was shot in the heart and abdomen and is currently presumed dead, though his death hasn’t been officially confirmed. Considering the events in Jujutsu Kaisen, characters have survived even severe injuries – for example, Gojo recovered from brain damage and a heart wound. If Cross possesses the Reverse Cursed Technique, his recovery is possible, depending on his skill level.
If they don’t act, someone else might use Reversed Cursed Technique (RCT) on him to save him. Dabura is nearby, and given his power, he likely possesses some of the strongest RCT in the Jujutsu Kaisen world. Killing Cross feels premature, but his death could also be what officially starts the conflict, so it’s a difficult decision.
A War Between Humans And Simurians Is Now Inevitable
Image by Viz Media Before chapter 12 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, I really got the impression that things were heading towards a peaceful agreement between the aliens and humans – like they were actually making progress on a deal, instead of gearing up for a fight. It felt hopeful!
Since we don’t know what will happen to Cross, it looks like a war is inevitable. If Cross dies, there will be no more negotiations.
Even if Cross lives, a lasting peace is far from certain, particularly now that the sorcerers have revealed their true intentions. This chapter also makes it clear that Rumelians experience pain when cursed spirits are removed, similar to the pain they feel when their own deities are affected. This creates a difficult situation, as simply letting cursed spirits roam freely isn’t an option. The fragile peace between humans and Simurians is now seriously threatened.
The sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, titled Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, is currently being published in Weekly Shonen Jump. Chapter 12 is scheduled to come out on November 23, 2025, at midnight in Japan (11:00 AM Eastern Time, 8:00 AM Pacific Time). Readers can access the chapter without charge on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app.
