This article contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen series.
The main story of Jujutsu Kaisen concluded in 2024, and a new sequel, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, has since been released. Written by Gege Akutami and illustrated by Yuji Iwasaki, JJK Modulo is a brief but thrilling series. It takes place 68 years after the climactic battle of Shinjuku Showdown, where Gojo Satoru fought Ryomen Sukuna. Though Gojo lost his life in that fight, it ultimately paved the way for Sukuna’s defeat.
Gojo’s absence is still deeply felt by fans of Jujutsu Kaisen. While it’s established that he’s dead, many are hoping to see him return in the JJK Modulo storyline. Unfortunately, a return to the main plot isn’t possible given his death and the 70-year time skip. However, creator Gege Akutami has brought him back in a new manga project – a beautifully colored spread – offering fans a welcome return in a different format.

Gege Akutami is handling the Jujutsu Kaisen spin-off, JJK Modulo, differently than the original series. While working on Jujutsu Kaisen, Gege frequently expressed feeling exhausted, and his health suffered as a result – which isn’t surprising given the demanding work environment at Jump. The pressure at Jump is intense and often takes a toll on the health and well-being of its manga artists.
Gege Akutami was feeling overwhelmed, and his health suffered as a result. That’s why Yuji Iwasaki is now handling the artwork for JJK Modulo. Gege isn’t currently able to both write and illustrate the manga, but Yuji Iwasaki has done a fantastic job with the illustrations, and fans are very impressed. Gege still occasionally contributes his own artwork, and he recently collaborated with Yuji on the latest full-color illustration for JJK Modulo.
Yuji Iwasaki created an illustration showcasing both current and past generations of characters. On the right side, he depicted the newer characters including Usami, Dabura, Maru, Cross, Yuka, and Tsurugi. The left side, drawn by Gege Akutami, featured the older generation of sorcerers. Notably, Ryomen Sukuna was positioned opposite Dabura, and Gojo Satoru was shown facing off against Usami – a parallel meant to highlight that Usami now mentors the new generation, just as Gojo did during Sukuna’s time.
The special illustration included other key characters like Yuji Itadori, Nobara, and Megumi Fushiguro. Fans were thrilled to see Gege Akutami drawing manga again after a long hiatus, and his depiction of Gojo was a welcome sight. It’s clear Akutami hasn’t forgotten Gojo Satoru, and neither has the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, even seventy years after his passing.
Gojo Was Drawn Next To Sukuna As The Leader Of The Next Generation
The latest full-color illustration from JJK Modulo clearly establishes Gojo and Sukuna as the most powerful sorcerers of their generation. Sukuna is prominently featured, fitting his role as the primary antagonist, and is visually connected to Dabura, who seems to be fulfilling a similar villainous role in Modulo. Sukuna’s imposing depiction highlights that Dabura is a threat of comparable strength.
You can appreciate beauty from a distance, but you can’t expect it to understand your feelings. — Gojo Satoru
Gojo often seemed distant and kept to himself, unlike Sukuna, who was driven by a thirst for power. Gojo’s focus wasn’t simply becoming stronger; he genuinely wanted to protect people, and that guided his use of sorcery.
The illustration strongly emphasized that Gojo and Sukuna represented the previous generation of power. Sukuna was the most formidable villain in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, commanding respect even from other curses, while Gojo led the sorcerers and aimed to reshape the world according to his own vision.
Gojo and Sukuna were both incredibly well-written characters, and many fans feel their deaths, while impactful, could have been handled differently – especially Gojo’s. A year later, people are still discussing their stories, both fans and even characters within the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, constantly referencing Ryomen Sukuna and Gojo Satoru.
Gojo Satoru Could Still Play A Role In JJK’s Sequel
- The Gojo Clan Is Very Important In JJK Modulo
- Satoru’s Powers Could Appear Again
It’s now clear that Gojo Satoru is dead, and he won’t be brought back to life or have a major role in the story going forward. However, Gojo can still impact the plot. Yuji Itadori is still alive and remembers Gojo well, so fans may see Gojo again through Yuji’s memories. Additionally, the Gojo clan could become important in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Taking away a child’s innocence and carefree days is something I can’t forgive… I still haven’t been able to forgive those who robbed someone young of their youth. – Gojo Satoru
As many fans know, the Gojo family is still thriving and is now more powerful than ever. The internal workings of this family are complex, and the author, Gege Akutami, could bring Gojo Satoru back into the story in interesting ways by exploring these dynamics. Gojo had a huge impact on his family, and it will be fascinating to see how Akutami develops this further. Ultimately, fans are eager to see Gojo return – he was a uniquely charismatic and compelling character. His reappearance would greatly benefit the series, and hopefully, we’ll get to see it happen as the story continues.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s sequel, called Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, runs in the Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine. The series is set 68 years into the future, after the events of Shinjuku Showdown. The main characters of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo are Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu, the grandchildren of Yuta and Maki. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17 will be released on January 4, 2026. The release time of the chapter is midnight JST, or 11:00 AM ET (8:00 AM PT). Fans can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app.
