The opportunity to revisit The Lands Between is drawing nearer, and I’m not referring to Elden Ring: Nightreign. Elden Ring, the groundbreaking action role-playing game by FromSoftware, has been hailed as one of the greatest games ever made due to its stunning open-world design, innovative gameplay mechanics, captivating setting, and collaborative worldbuilding with renowned author George R.R. Martin of A Song of Ice and Fire. To put it simply, it’s a heavenly union. For more than five years, the gaming community has eagerly anticipated this title, and the excitement surrounding its future remains undiminished. Though whispers suggest that the Soulsborne game may be headed for a cinematic adaptation in Hollywood, George R.R. Martin continues to stoke the fire of anticipation.
At IGN Fan Fest 2025, the event’s website posed a question to writer Martin about the potential future of Elden Ring. His response provided us with the strongest hint so far that a movie adaptation of Elden Ring could indeed be on the horizon.
He mentioned that there’s been some chatter regarding the possibility of turning Elden Ring into a film,” he shared.
When someone avoids discussing a particular project, it’s often because they are bound by contract not to discuss it, suggesting that the project is currently in progress, perhaps even a film production. This cryptic hint can provide enough information for fans to make a wish on the Sites of Grace. Fortunately for Elden Ring players, George R.R. Martin has shared more updates about the project’s status and, regrettably, potential obstacles that may hinder its theatrical release.
Continuing on from the previous point, Martin faces a significant obstacle that might restrict his participation in the Elden Ring movie production, since he’s currently engaged in writing The Winds of Winter, the sixth novel in the A Song of Fire and Ice series.
I’m unsure if the Elden Ring movie will happen or how much I’ll be involved, as I’ve been working on my most recent book for a few years now, which has limited my availability for other projects.
If you’ve kept up with Martin’s progress on this series, you might know that this project has been under development since 2010 and faced delays for over a decade. Given the extensive world-building already done for Elden Ring, it’s plausible that Martin, despite working on his next book, could still contribute to the film in roles such as executive producer or co-writer. Additionally, it’s worth noting that he created Elden Ring while writing The Winds of Winter, so this information might be more about managing expectations for the movie rather than generating excitement.
In case Elden Ring ever graced the silver screen in the future, it would undoubtedly draw a packed house on its premiere day. Given the immense anticipation and backing that Miyazaki and Martin’s celebrated fantasy video game already enjoys, the mere prospect of a movie adaptation has everyone on tenterhooks.
