The mobile game version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game (PTCGO), affectionately known as Pokémon TCG Pocket, is showering its users with a multitude of Trade Tokens. This app has been a resounding success since its debut, with its unique twist on the beloved Trading Card Game amassing over 100 million downloads and reigniting enthusiasm for the Pokémon trading card pastime. In Pokémon TCG Pocket, players can open up two packs of cards daily for free, engage in ranked and casual battles against other players, trade cards, display their collections, and much more.
In January 2025, the much-anticipated feature of trading was introduced in the digital version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game (Pokémon TCG Pocket). While some enthusiasts appreciated this addition, many found the cost associated with trading to be excessive, necessitating a substantial collection of trade tokens at the expense of their cards. Rare and coveted cards required a significant number of Trade Tokens, leading to discontent among players attempting to exchange them. In response to these complaints, The Pokémon Company announced on March 13 that they would eliminate trade tokens entirely, making Shinedust the new currency for trading. These substantial alterations in the trading system of Pokémon TCG Pocket are anticipated to occur this fall, with additional Shinedust being given for each duplicate card obtained from booster packs.
On April 1st, the Pokemon TCG Pocket team generously provided each player with 1,000 Trade Tokens, which can be used to trade valuable cards without spending anything extra. Players can obtain these tokens by visiting their Gift Box on the main menu. The announcement was made in a tweet from the official Pokemon TCG Pocket account early in the morning. This isn’t the first time the team has given away Trade Tokens; they have been gradually distributing them since they first announced changes to the trading system. In the future, eliminating Trade Tokens could potentially benefit the game by making it easier for players to trade cards using a readily available currency.

In the latest update for Pokemon TCG Pocket, they’ve introduced Ranked Battles, allowing players to engage in intense matches against others. Players can collect up to 100 Pack Hourglasses by participating in these battles, significantly reducing the time needed to open new card packs. The rewards for these Ranked Battles have garnered a lot of positive attention on Reddit, with one post praising them reaching over 1800 upvotes. Beginners will receive 10 Pack Hourglasses, while higher ranks offer more, culminating in 100 Pack Hourglasses for those who reach the top 10,000 in Master Ball rank.
Fans of Pokemon who have been eagerly collecting rare cards in the game may soon be able to own physical versions of these cards. It’s been announced that merchandise for the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket is being developed, featuring real-life versions of the immersive cards, often referred to as “paper theaters.” Additionally, other items such as a TCG Pocket bag, keychain, and commemorative coins are also in the works for fans to buy. The physical merchandise is slated to debut in Japan soon, giving enthusiasts the chance to own 3D paper artwork of popular cards like Mewtwo EX, Pikachu EX, or Charizard EX.
