Sony has rolled out a fresh system software update for the PlayStation Portable Remote Player, offering much-anticipated features that PlayStation Portable Cloud Streaming beta users have yearned for since its initial release.

When it debuted towards the end of 2023, the PS Portal faced some confusion among many due to its unique nature. It was Sony’s first PlayStation-branded portable device since the unsuccessful PS Vita in 2011. However, the PS Portal functioned primarily as an accessory for Remote Play with the PS5. Despite initial doubts, the PS Portal became a significant triumph for Sony, outperforming their demand expectations significantly. Unfortunately, the absence of cloud streaming support at launch was a disappointment to users, especially since it appeared feasible on the handheld device.

Back in 2024, Sony, understanding the vision, introduced a beta version of PS Portal Cloud Streaming exclusively for PS Plus Premium members. However, it was more of a technical demonstration than a refined user experience, missing some essential features. Now, Sony is enhancing the PS Plus Cloud Streaming beta significantly through a fresh system update.

As a PS Portal user, you’ll appreciate the ability to organize the cloud game catalog by title name, release date, or the latest addition to PS Plus, making navigation through the expanding library much smoother. Moreover, this update allows for capturing gameplay during streaming, similar to how screenshots and clips function on a PS5 or standard Remote Play sessions.

Additionally, enhancements have been made to session management that enable users to temporarily halt a cloud-streamed game and set the PS Portal to rest mode, but the connection will automatically terminate after 15 seconds of inactivity. If the user does not pause the session, a warning will appear after ten minutes of idleness, counting down before the session concludes. To manage busy servers, a new queue screen has been implemented, displaying estimated wait times and launching the game once it’s the user’s turn. Lastly, Sony introduced a feedback system using emoji-style ratings, enabling users to rate their satisfaction with PS Plus Premium from one to five.

The recent upgrade to the PlayStation Portal brings delightful changes, particularly for those eagerly anticipating an increased focus on online games. It’s noteworthy that the cloud streaming aspect of PS Portal is currently in its trial phase, indicating Sony might be enhancing it with additional features and potential game support soon.

On the Cloud Streaming (Beta) screen, you’ll notice a fresh way to organize your games. A new sort icon will appear in the upper left corner, enabling you to arrange games based on factors such as: Most recently added to PS Plus (set as default), Alphabetical order by name, or by their Release date.

Capture Gameplay

In a Cloud Streaming (Beta) session, the “Create” button on your PlayStation Portal will now be active for use. Here’s what you can accomplish with it:

  • Press once: Display the create menu
  • Press and hold: Take a screenshot
  • Press twice: Start/finish recording a video clip

During your streaming session, images and videos are automatically saved to a cloud server. You can access these saved items through the PlayStation App by navigating to [Library] > [Captures]. These captured moments will remain stored for 14 days following their creation.

Queue

Currently, you may need to hold off playing until our streaming server isn’t at capacity anymore. The projected waiting period will be shown on the screen, and when it’s your turn, the game session will initiate automatically.

Pause

During a Cloud Streaming (Beta) game session, gameplay will now pause in the following situations:

  • Gameplay will pause when you open the PS Portal quick menu. You can open the quick menu by pressing the PS button, swiping left from the top right corner of your screen, or tapping the quick menu icon from the status bar.
  • When you press the power button once, PS Portal will be put into rest mode and the game will be paused. You can unpause and get back to your gameplay by pressing the power button again. If PS Portal remains in rest mode for more than 15 seconds, the cloud streaming session will be disconnected.
  • Gameplay will also pause when a system error message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Note that the pause feature will not be supported in some cases, such as during an online multiplayer session.

Notification of Inactivity

From now on, you’ll get a system alert when your streaming session is nearly ending because it’s been idle for more than 10 minutes.
