In *Ghost of Yotei*, the follow-up to the 2019 game *Ghost of Tsushima*, the main conflict has shifted from a large-scale invasion to a more personal story. The game’s hero, Atsu, is on a quest to find a notorious group in northern Japan who are responsible for a pivotal event and Atsu’s own painful past.
The Yotei Six are a powerful organization determined to unite the wild northern lands under the rule of their leader, Lord Saito. But they aren’t the only ones vying for control; the Shogun, operating from the south, also has plans for the region and is using Clan Matsumae to carry them out. Atsu enters this conflict with a single, unwavering purpose: to eliminate the Yotei Six, no matter the cost.
Be careful! This list reveals key plot points from the beginning of the game. Even though some of these details are shown in trailers and other promotional content, you might want to skip this if you want to experience the story without any spoilers.
Who Are the Yotei Six in Ghost of Yotei?

A Dangerous Collective, and the Target of Atsu’s Vengeance:
The Yotei Six initially appear to be a typical, one-dimensional villain group, simply there to challenge the hero. But as the game unfolds, you’ll find their motivations are more complex. Like the saying goes, everyone sees themselves as the hero of their own story, and that’s particularly true for the members of the Yotei Six.
Atsu doesn’t fight the Yotei Six as a unified group. Instead, she hunts down each member individually, discovering their personal stories along the way. Like many situations during wartime, Atsu finds that things aren’t always simple, and each member has a complex background. Here are the individuals she encounters:
- The Snake
- The Oni
- The Kitsune
- The Spider & The Dragon
- Lord Saito
The story of *Ghost of Yotei* begins with a shocking revelation: all six members of the Yotei group were involved in the brutal murder of Atsu’s family. Atsu was forced to witness the crime and was then cruelly impaled on a tree with her father’s own sword. This horrific event fuels Atsu’s quest for revenge and provides key insights into Lord Saito and the motivations of his loyal, yet self-serving, followers.
Who is The Snake in Ghost of Yotei?

A Lover of Drink and Violence:
The Snake is an enigmatic figure within the Yotei Six. Though he’s the first to come across Atsu’s Wolf Blade, we know surprisingly little about him. What is revealed about The Snake suggests he truly embodies his namesake – he moves stealthily through the story, appearing just as unpleasant in past events as he does in the present.
The Snake is your first opponent in *Ghost of Yotei*, teaching you the core sword-fighting skills. This fight also powerfully opens the game’s story and is important to the game’s lore, revealing Atsu’s role as a vengeful spirit among the people of Ezo. Defeating The Snake is a pivotal moment that Atsu will remember throughout the game, though the reasons behind his tragic fate remain largely unknown.
Who is The Oni in Ghost of Yotei?

The Vain and Violent Leader of Saito’s Army:
You’ll probably find The Oni, one of the Yotei Six, before any of the others. Discovering him reveals a lot more information than finding The Snake. The Oni is introduced in the game’s opening flashback as a large, powerfully built man who fights with a huge Odachi sword. His intimidating armor and mask are designed to frighten opponents, referencing the Oni of Japanese legends – fearsome mythical demons.
The Oni wasn’t always a monster; he used to be a very handsome man, as shown in a painting Atsu finds. The painting reveals his sadness and longing for a time when he didn’t need to hide his face. However, Atsu is the one who forced him to wear a mask forever. During the Night of the Burning Tree, she slashed his face with her father’s sword. After Lord Saito trapped Atsu against a tree, The Oni tried to get revenge by setting the tree ablaze. This obsession with fire continues today, and he’s infamous for burning people alive – both his enemies and innocent civilians.
Who is The Kitsune in Ghost of Yotei?

The Mysterious Leader of the Nine Tails Shinobi:
Named after a playful, shapeshifting fox spirit from Japanese folklore, Kitsune is the most enigmatic of the Yotei Six, especially when the game begins. In the opening scene, Kitsune moves stealthily through the night, seemingly uninvolved in the violence that the other members are enjoying.
I’ve discovered that the Kitsune isn’t just some powerful warrior – they’re actually the leader of Lord Saito’s entire ninja army, the Nine Tails! They operate completely in the shadows, making sure Saito’s ruthless rules are followed. Their base is hidden away in the freezing, snowy Teshio Ridge, and they use all sorts of complicated codes and puzzles to keep their hideouts and training grounds secret. From what I’ve heard, they fight with a Kusarigama and even use poison gas, so they’re shaping up to be the hardest fight in the first part of *Ghost of Yotei*. But honestly, things aren’t as simple as they seem. As you get to know the Kitsune’s story, Atsu is going to be faced with something she really isn’t ready for.
Who Are the Spider & the Dragon in Ghost of Yotei?

An Inseparable Pair, a Weakening Bond:
In *Ghost of Yotei*, The Spider and the Dragon are immediately established as a duo. They are not just siblings, but also the children of Lord Saito. Though Lord Saito initially placed them in powerful roles, he now seems to be losing confidence in their capabilities.
The two brothers prefer using guns because they’re more reliable than fighting with their bare hands. As the story progresses, it’s revealed they are the reason Atsu believes her brother Jubei is deceased. Despite being brothers, they have very different personalities. The Spider frequently defies his father, even openly disagreeing with him. He’s quick to act on impulse, while the Dragon seems much more loyal to Lord Saito, though this may just be an act.
Who is Lord Saito in Ghost of Yotei?

Disgraced Clan Leader and Atsu’s Sworn Enemy:
When I started reading *Ghost of Yotei*, Lord Saito seemed like he was just leading a bunch of rough, outlaw types. But as the story unfolded, I realized the Yotei Six were so much more! It turns out Lord Saito used to be the head of the entire Saito Clan, but the Shogun kicked him out and exiled him. He fled to the wild, lawless lands of Ezo in the north, and now he’s driven by a desire for revenge – not just against the Shogun, but against everyone who betrayed him and took his position as Clan Leader.
Lord Saito’s arrival at Atsu’s home that night stemmed from his belief that the family needed to be punished as a warning to others. He didn’t realize that this strong action would ultimately lead to his own downfall. However, Lord Saito is a complex character; the game repeatedly offers him chances to kill Atsu, but he consistently refuses. Though he never shows regret, it’s possible he secretly believes Atsu deserves fairness, or at least the opportunity for it.
