Ghost of Yotei: Best Characters

Although *Ghost of Yotei* takes place centuries after *Ghost of Tsushima*, the two games share similar core themes despite both being open-world samurai adventures.

Atsu, the main character in the game’s sequel, experienced a terrible childhood trauma when her family was violently murdered. Years later, she returns to the island of Ezo – the setting of *Ghost of Yotei* – seeking revenge on those who wronged her. Though her path is filled with darkness, Atsu meets many compelling characters along the way, including villains who leave a lasting impression. These characters are what players remember most about the game.

There will be spoilers.

Atsu

A Just Cause

Atsu is a more developed character than Jin from *Ghost of Tsushima*. While both characters are driven by revenge, Atsu has suffered a greater personal loss – she witnessed the violent deaths of her entire family at the hands of the Yotei 6. Despite this, her actions aren’t always reasonable, as she can be quite headstrong, which is common for those seeking vengeance. The more players learn about Atsu’s story, the more invested they’ll become in her journey.

Lord Saito

A Charismatic Villain

Okay, so both *Ghost of Yotei* and *Ghost of Tsushima* really nailed the villains, in my opinion. Lord Saito, the leader of the Yotei 6, is seriously bad news, but you actually *get* why he is the way he is. There’s this flashback where Jubei and Atsu first meet him while mushroom hunting, and honestly, he seems like a pretty decent guy at first. It’s cool because that’s what makes a villain interesting in games – that contrast between a noble side and being totally ruthless. It’s that duality that really draws you in.

Jubei

Another Wolf Ghost Appears

We first meet Jubei in memories as Atsu’s supposedly deceased brother. He reappears during The Oni quest as a powerful samurai fighting for the Matsumae. Initially, their reunion is joyful, but disagreements soon arise between them. This dynamic mirrors the relationship Jin has with his uncle in *Ghost of Tsushima*, though Jubei and Atsu manage to reconcile much faster.

Both Jubei and the other character are very headstrong. Jubei is fiercely honorable and deeply cares for his soldiers. However, a future revelation will show a softer, more compassionate side to him, beyond his role as a samurai.

Hanbei

Understandably Afraid

In *Ghost of Yotei*, players can learn from Hanbei, a master weaponsmith. He was once a highly-skilled bounty hunter known for fighting with two swords, but lost his left arm in a battle with Lord Saito. After the injury, Hanbei went into hiding in the mountains, fearing further loss and wanting to protect his apprentice, Atsu.

With a little encouragement, Hanbei’s serious demeanor softens, leading to an impressive training sequence. He serves as a good reminder that even the most skilled fighters are still human, and everyone experiences fear at times.

Ina

An Explosive Personality

Ina comes from a long line of firework artisans, but Lord Saito’s war forced her to adapt her skills, turning her colorful displays into weapons. Players will encounter her during a side quest where she’s fiercely defending herself against raiders with a barrage of explosive devices.

When players reach Ina, she rewards them with bombs to protect her shop. This mission is particularly well-done and helps Ina become a memorable character, especially with how she reacts later in the game.

Oyuki

A Woman Of Many Faces

During the ‘Kitsune’ quest, players will encounter Oyuki, a shamisen player much like Atsu from ‘Ghost of Yotei.’ She joins the quest for revenge against The Kitsune, but her story has a surprising secret. Oyuki wasn’t just anyone – she *was* The Kitsune, until Lord Saito removed her from the position after she secretly helped Atsu escape when they were children.

Although Oyuki didn’t directly assist Atsu, her actions eventually benefited her own situation. The consequences of this discovery are complicated, and they will challenge Atsu’s violent tendencies.

Taro

It’s A Living

Atsu unexpectedly finds Taro in the Ezo plains, moments from being killed by an angry, wandering samurai. Taro makes a living by scavenging battlefields for anything valuable, which he then sells. While his methods annoy some, it’s hard not to admire his business sense, even if it’s a harsh life for a child. Though his sales pitch isn’t as memorable as the Merchant from *Resident Evil 4*, Taro is definitely one of the most engaging shopkeepers in gaming.

Mad Goro

Belongs In A Rick & Morty Episode

When players first encounter Mad Goro in The Oni missions, they’ll find him to be a chaotic and unsettling character. He constantly throws bombs and shoots with incredible accuracy. He’s also very blunt, openly discussing unpleasant topics. Although initially off-putting, his bizarre behavior quickly becomes humorous and endearing to players.
