Ghost of Yotei: Building Bridges Choice Guide

Building Bridges is a side quest in Ghost of Yotei. In it, a samurai from the Matsumae clan asks Atsu for assistance in preventing ronin from destroying a bridge he’s constructing with the help of the local people. Sanjuro, a colonist, is also aiding the samurai and will offer to guard the bridge with Atsu, protecting it from the ronin’s nighttime attacks.

However, Sanjuro leaves Atsu alone during her watch, and she wakes up to find the ronin about to set the bridge ablaze. After stopping him, she realizes that Sanjuro was actually the one who hired the ronin to begin with. Now, Atsu must decide whether to capture Sanjuro and turn him over to the Matsumae clan, or to let him go.

Should You Catch Sanjuro or Let Him Go in Building Bridges

Once you’ve beaten the ronin attempting to destroy the bridge, and only one remains, a cinematic sequence will begin, featuring Sanjuro’s arrival as he tries to convince Atsu to reconsider. You will then be presented with two options for what to say:

  • I still have a job to do.
  • I understand, but this won’t end well.

In terms of how the game plays, your decision doesn’t change what happens. Atsu will always get 450 coins for finishing the quest, and the bridge won’t fall down, no matter how you handle Sanjuro. But, the story will change a little bit at the end depending on what you choose. Here’s what will happen:

What Happens If You Catch Sanjuro in Building Bridges

  • I still have a job to do.

Atsu plans to capture Sanjuro and deliver him to the Matsumae samurai who employed him. However, the Matsumae won’t execute Sanjuro; instead, they will state: “There’s been enough violence tonight. You are free to go. And don’t forget this act of mercy when you interact with others.”

Okay, so I managed to get Sanjuro released, and the samurai basically told him to hit the road. I’d call this the “good” outcome because it actually wraps things up nicely and solves the problem. It feels like the right way to go, you know?

What Happens If You Let Sanjuro Go in Building Bridges

  • I understand, but this won’t end well

Atsu will allow Sanjuro to escape after he expresses his gratitude, ensuring the bridge remains undamaged. The following day, samurai from Matsumae will arrive and notice Sanjuro is gone, despite the bridge being intact. Atsu will explain that she spared a few individuals she believed were saboteurs, as she had been asked to do, subtly acknowledging Sanjuro’s role in the fire. This confirms his connection to the burning.

Matsumae will be disappointed you didn’t let him speak to those responsible and try to resolve things peacefully, but he will still give you a reward. This decision is often seen as the “bad” outcome because the samurai misses an opportunity to gain the support of the locals.

There is a Bamboo Strike location just west of the Building Bridges Tale.
