Ghost of Yotei Confirms Return of Tsushima’s Guiding Wind System

Summary

  • Ghost of Yotei will retain the Guiding Wind navigation system from Ghost of Tsushima.
  • The return of the acclaimed feature was confirmed in the game’s latest trailer, which also revealed its release date: October 2.

In the game known as Ghost of Yotei, the Guiding Wind navigation system will be incorporated. This clever mechanic, which previously appeared in the game Ghost of Tsushima, has been confirmed to make a comeback following its appearance in the game’s recent trailer.

Back in 2020, I was absolutely blown away by Ghost of Tsushima, a game that left an indelible mark on the gaming world. Two aspects that truly shone were the breathtaking art direction and the ingenious Guiding Wind mechanic. This nifty system subtly guided me to my destinations using visual cues, eliminating the need for intrusive HUD elements. Fast forward to September 2024, Sucker Punch Productions unveiled the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, but they kept mum about whether the beloved Guiding Wind would make a comeback in the new game.

The question has been addressed by the newly released trailer for the game on April 23, which unveiled the launch date for “Ghost of Yotei”. Towards the end of the three-minute clip, the main character Atsu can be seen making her way towards what seems to be her old home, located beneath Mount Yotei. As she nears a large ginkgo tree, you notice distinct white wind patterns around her – a signature element of the Guiding Wind system. The most apparent signs of this system are visible at the 2:51-minute point in the trailer.

Prior to this official announcement, there had been extensive discussion online concerning whether the “Ghost of Yotei” might alter the Guiding Wind feature with another mechanism. Some enthusiasts suggested that adopting a new system could aid the game in distinguishing itself from its forerunner, positing that maybe the wolf companion alluded to in the initial trailer could be utilized for navigation. Nevertheless, it seems that Sucker Punch opted not to deviate significantly from the “Ghost of Tsushima” gameplay model with the sequel.

Guiding Wind’s Return in Ghost of Yotei Makes Sense

In essence, the Guiding Wind feature played a crucial role in shaping the unique appeal of Ghost of Tsushima, earning it widespread acclaim. Given this, it’s entirely logical that the mechanic returns in Ghost of Yotei. However, the new game will distinguish itself from its predecessor in multiple ways, such as featuring a fresh setting and allowing players to wield two weapons like katanas and ōdachis simultaneously. From what we’ve seen so far, Atsu appears to place less emphasis on honor compared to Jin Sakai, which could lead to distinct character interactions.

As a gamer excitedly counting down the days, I can’t wait to get my hands on the Ghost of Yotei when it drops on October 2!
