The following contains spoilers for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Due to the growing number of games set in feudal Japan, it’s inevitable that they will be compared to each other. For instance, “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” and “Ghost of Tsushima” are often compared, but some argue that the praise for “Ghost of Tsushima” might have influenced the comparisons more than any intentional similarities between the two games. As another game set in feudal Japan, “Ghost of Yotei,” developed by Sucker Punch, will likely be compared to its predecessor and even “Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
From what we know about the Ghost of Yotei, its plot appears to share a significant resemblance with the narrative of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as they both revolve around tales of revenge. While the full extent of Atsu’s vengeful journey in Ghost of Yotei remains undisclosed, it is clear that she will pursue those who caused her family’s demise and seek retribution. To avoid making Atsu’s story a straightforward quest for vengeance, Ghost of Yotei could delve deeper into one of the main themes from Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ revenge plot: the exploration of complex emotions and the struggle between vengeance and redemption.
Ghost of Yotei Should Be Open to Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Theme of Forgiveness
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Is a Revenge Story Saturated in Forgiveness
In the world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, my personal quest is driven by revenge. I, a skilled shinobi hailing from Iga Province, am on a mission to avenge my father, Nagato, who was gravely injured during an attack on our village by Oda Nobunaga and his troops. Meanwhile, Yasuke, an African warrior turned samurai under Nobunaga, grapples with his past tied to the Templar Order. His journey, much like mine, is one of tracking down those who caused him and his family harm.
In the heart-wrenching tale of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it’s not just about seeking revenge, but rather, it’s a profound exploration of forgiveness. As I, Naoe Kanetsugu, first encountered Yasuke, a samurai who served under Nobunaga during the raid on my village, my instinct was to end his life. But then, Junjiro intervened, reminding me of the blood on my own hands, for I was responsible for the death of his father, Ido Yoshihiro. This revelation compelled me to scrutinize the consequences of my actions and ultimately choose to forgive Yasuke. In an unexpected turn, our paths intertwined, not as adversaries, but as two souls bound by a shared understanding of redemption.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players have the option to decide between killing or sparing specific characters, reinforcing the game’s central ideas of empathy, tolerance, and mercy.
Ghost of Yotei’s Revenge Arc Would Be More Nuanced Focusing on Forgiveness
When a tale primarily revolves around the protagonist seeking retribution, there’s a potential pitfall that their motivations might become mono-faceted and all growth in their character might lead towards that singular emotional climax. When revenge is the sole focus, characters may not engage in self-reflection or strive for transformation, effectively reducing moral ambiguity to the pursuit of their goal. This is where the theme of forgiveness from “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” could enhance “Ghost of Yotei’s” revenge story, as it might introduce more layers to Atsu’s character.
To ensure that Atsu’s tale doesn’t lead solely to retribution, it could be advantageous for the Ghost of Yotei to delve into a key theme prevalent in the revenge storyline of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
In the game Ghost of Yotei, if players were granted an opportunity to pardon Atsu’s adversaries, it could significantly enrich her character development over time. Essentially, this decision would add depth to Atsu, steering her narrative away from typical one-dimensional revenge storylines and offering players a multifaceted view of her journey. Considering the intricate character arc that Sucker Punch crafted for Jin Sakai in Ghost of Tsushima, there’s a strong possibility that Atsu’s own storyline could prove equally engaging, but only time will confirm this.
