The new game, Ghost of Yotei, introduces a new main character named Atsu. Taking place hundreds of years after Ghost of Tsushima, Atsu’s story centers on her personal quest for revenge against the Yotei Six, the group who murdered her family—not an invading Mongol army.
Sucker Punch Productions clearly respects Japanese culture, as seen in both *Tsushima* and *Yotei*. Because of this, both games offer fully voiced dialogue in both English and Japanese. Atsu is voiced by Erika Ishii in the English version and Fairouz Ai in the Japanese version. Both actresses deliver excellent performances in *Ghost of Yotei*, and they’re also known for their work in many other popular video games.
Erika Ishii
Erika Ishii, who voices Atsu in English, is landing one of their most prominent roles yet. Though this is a big moment, Ishii isn’t new to voice acting – they’ve been gaining recognition since 2020, and Atsu joins a growing list of well-known video game characters they’ve brought to life with their unique voice.
Valkyrie – Apex Legends
A Flying Recon Legend With A Pack Full Of Missiles
Apex Legends is a leading example of a free-to-play game that successfully combines different styles of gameplay. It’s a compelling mix of hero shooter and battle royale, where players team up in groups of three. They each choose a unique hero and parachute onto a large map, competing against other teams to be the last one remaining.
I’ve been playing Valkyrie since she dropped in Season 9, and she’s quickly become one of my favorites. Erika Ishii does an awesome job voicing her – Valkyrie, or Kairi Imahara as she’s known, is this total rebel who doesn’t really care about rules. She’ll take on any job, as long as it’s exciting. Ishii nails that kind of tough, ‘don’t mess with me’ attitude. But what’s really cool is that you start to see a softer side when Valkyrie talks about her family, especially her dad. It adds a lot of depth to the character.
Rook – Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The Leader Of The Veilguard Is Both Deadly And Jovial
Erika Ishii was one of the voice actors for Rook, the main character players control in the game *Dragon Age: The Veilguard*. No matter who voices them, Rook is a very contemporary hero – confident, with a strong moral compass, and quick with a witty remark, similar to many popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Okay, so everyone’s been talking about the writing in *Dragon Age: The Veilguard*, and honestly, Erika Ishii did a fantastic job with what she was given – as good as any of the voice actors playing the Rook. The story itself has its ups and downs, but when it’s good, it’s *really* good – exactly what a Dragon Age fan wants. The best parts, for me, were definitely the conversations between my Rook and the imprisoned Solas. They felt like a tense chess match, and Ishii nailed every line.
Domina Venomblade – World Of Warcraft
The Third Plaguefall Boss Was One Of Erika Ishii’s First Major Roles
2020 marked a turning point for voice actor Erika Ishii. After years of contributing to smaller games and providing background voices in larger titles, they began landing prominent, credited roles in major releases. A notable example is their performance as Domina Venomblade, a boss character in the Plaguefall area of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.
Surprisingly, Domina doesn’t have many spoken lines, and most of them are short shouts she uses in battle. However, she left a strong impression on many players because she was a difficult opponent in Shadowlands. She was especially challenging for players attempting to defeat the expansion’s bosses on their own to earn a special mount. Those who struggled with her likely became very familiar with voice actress Erika Ishii, as they heard her lines over and over during the fight.
Ana Bray – Destiny 2
Teacher Of The Warmind Rasputin
In the same year Erika Ishii voiced a character in *World of Warcraft: Shadowlands*, they also voiced Ana Bray in *Destiny 2*. Ana is a witty and adventurous Guardian who lost her memories after a near-fatal experience. However, she had a clue about her past – an ID card from Clovis Bray was found with her, linking her to the Bray family.
A single clue about her past fuels Ana’s intense search for answers, leading her to even fake her own death. As she investigates, she begins to realize a surprising connection to the powerful AI, Rasputin. Erika Ishii brilliantly portrays all sides of Ana’s personality. They capture her playful spirit while also convincingly showing her deep commitment to both understanding her history and saving Rasputin from the dangerous Worm God, Xol. This highlights the skill and emotional depth Erika Ishii brought to the role.
Dr. Wenjie Evans – Deathloop
The Multi-Variant Time Loop Architect
In the game *Deathloop*, you play as Colt Vahn, an assassin stuck in a time loop on the island of Blackreef. To break the loop, Colt needs to eliminate six key individuals who are maintaining it, and he has to do it all in one continuous cycle. If he fails or dies, the loop restarts, and he has to begin again.
Wenjie Evans is a key figure in the game, a brilliant physicist and one of the creators of Blackreef’s AEON program – and supposedly, the person responsible for the time loop. However, she’s also incredibly arrogant and willing to take huge risks with reality itself. When the player, Colt, encounters her, she’s used the time loop to create multiple copies of herself, meaning he has to eliminate several Wenjies. Erika Ishii delivers a fantastic performance as Wenjie, portraying both her sharp intelligence and her growing panic as her plans fall apart.
Fairouz Ai
If players select the Japanese voice-over for the *Ghost of Yotei* campaign, Fairouz Ai will voice the character Atsu. Ai is a well-known voice actress with a large portfolio in anime and video games, though she started working on video games in 2019. She’s particularly famous for her roles in several popular video games.
Ayre – Armored Core 6: Fires Of Rubicon
The Voice In 621’s Head
After the events of Operation Wallclimber in Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, the player character, known as 621 or “Raven,” is hit with a powerful blast of Coral energy. This exposure allows 621 to connect with Ayre, a unique being called a C-Pulse Mutation, and hear her voice inside their head for the rest of the game.
Ayre and Walter serve as contrasting influences on 621. Walter represents the values of the Rubicon Research Institute – where his father once worked – while Ayre is primarily dedicated to protecting the planet Rubicon 3. These two characters often feel like opposing forces guiding 621, and which one seems ‘good’ or ‘bad’ depends on the player’s choices. In the Japanese voice-over of *Armored Core 6*, Ayre is voiced by Fairouz Ai, who portrays her with a mysterious yet caring demeanor, consistently highlighting her concern for Rubicon 3.
Catherina Grann – Metaphor: ReFantazio
A Hero To Her Tribe
Catherina Grann is one of the candidates competing in the central election within the world of Metaphor: ReFantazio. She belongs to the Paripus tribe, a small, energetic group of people who have animal characteristics like dog ears and tails. Sadly, the Paripus are often mistreated and looked down on because of their natural abilities. As a skilled bounty hunter, Catherina plans to get revenge on the nobles who have oppressed her people by entering the Royal Tournament and challenging the main character.
Catherina is a complex character in *Metaphor: ReFantazio*. Although she’s a rival to the player, she can also become an ally. Despite being enemies, she respects the player’s willingness to help others. When players offer her unconditional support, a connection forms, and she joins their side. Fairouz Ai portrays Catherina as both rough around the edges – fitting for a bounty hunter – and genuinely honorable. She’s a relatable character whose methods might be harsh, but her motivations are understandable and her targets often deserve her anger. Ai embraces Catherina’s flaws and darker moments, but ultimately portrays her as fighting for a better future for her people, making her a surprisingly sympathetic character.
