Ghost of Yotei May Not Be Tsushima 2, But It Doesn’t Mean Jin is Done For

Ghost of Yotei May Not Be Tsushima 2, But It Doesn't Mean Jin is Done For

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for open-world action-adventure games and a deep appreciation for Japanese culture, I couldn’t help but be both surprised and elated at the announcement of Ghost of Yotei during the recent State of Play event. The prospect of a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima has been eagerly anticipated, but the unexpected twist of a brand-new protagonist in Atsu, a female Ronin, added an element of unpredictability that I found refreshing.

At the latest State of Play event, there were numerous thrilling revelations, but the announcement of Ghost of Yotei undoubtedly grabbed everyone’s attention. The news about a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima has been eagerly anticipated for some time, but the surprise unveiling of Ghost of Yotei took many by surprise. Not only is this game set over 300 years after the storyline of its predecessor, but it also introduces a completely new main character.

As Atsu, the female Ronin, I step into the limelight as the Ghost of Yotei. The announcement was unexpected, yet exhilarating, but it also brought a tinge of melancholy with Jin Sakai being written out of the story. Many fans, including myself, had been speculating that a sequel would center around the second Mongol invasion of Japan, which occurred not long after the first. However, Sucker Punch’s daring choice to transform Ghost of Tsushima into an anthology series is a bold move that I believe will prove to be more impactful. Yet, rest assured, Jin Sakai is not completely out of the picture as a character.

Ghost of Yotei Still Leaves Room For Jin Sakai’s Presence

Bringing a New Meaning to the Ghost of Tsushima Name

300 years after its earlier tale, the character of Jin from “Ghost of Tsushima” is undoubtedly deceased. Yet, this doesn’t preclude him from having a continued existence in some form. The narrative and happenings of “Ghost of Tsushima” might have evolved into folklore, making Jin a legendary figure. Thus, he continues to exist symbolically through stories, opening up chances for his character to be referenced and subtly hinted at throughout the storyline of “Ghost of Yotei”.

Whether it be through interactions with descendants or writings found throughout the game, Jin can still be an important presence, even if he is not physically there. Showcasing a new region and era of Japan is an intriguing change, and it could be fascinating to see how Jin’s story has evolved through word-of-mouth storytelling. Despite many decades passing since Ghost of Tsushima, Jin’s efforts to push back the Mongols wouldn’t be forgotten. There is even the possibility that Atsu could potentially be a descendant of Jin. Since the announcement of the sequel is fresh, there is barely anything known about the character, but being part of Jin’s lineage isn’t off the table.

The story, “Spirit of Yotei,” unfolds in the Ezo region during the year 1603. This was a territory that lay beyond the boundaries of Japanese control at that time.

It’s possible that Jin could subtly echo the “spirit” of the franchise by making a ghostly appearance in the story in a subtle manner. A developer from Sucker Punch has suggested that Ghost of Yotei might be the start of multiple spin-off stories. Weaving a chain reaction where each previous main character leaves an unexpected imprint on the narrative could be a clever approach to make the games feel interconnected, yet self-contained.

Ghost of Yotei is a Bold and Promising Choice

Sucker Punch Taking Chances

The Ghost of Tshusima and Ghost of Yotei laying the foundation for a new PlayStation series demonstrates that Sucker Punch isn’t shy about taking risks, which is thrilling. Instead of sticking with the conventional approach by focusing on the second Mongol invasion, the developer opted for innovative storytelling over an easier choice. While Ghost of Yotei shares some similarities in appearance with its predecessor, it’s evident that this game also aspires to tell a unique standalone tale of its own.

Regardless of the debate stirred by the fresh face of the protagonist in the latest installment of Ghost of Yotei, Atsu’s tale appears to promise another visually captivating and action-packed journey. Sucker Punch has left many astonished with this unexpected turn, and if the narrative delivers or even surpasses its former self, it could prove to be a masterstroke. Though Jin may no longer be physically present, his influence might linger on.
