Ghost of Yotei Shows off Odachi Combat

On the PlayStation YouTube channel, a fresh gameplay video debuted for the game “Ghost of Yotei,” focusing on how the main character Atsu uses the traditional Japanese greatsword known as the odachi. In the scene, riding on horseback, Atsu locates a group of five adversaries. She swiftly retrieves the sword from its storage on her back and brings down one enemy with an acrobatic leap from her horse. The subsequent skirmish is short, but it brilliantly demonstrates the odachi’s features as Atsu quickly eliminates her opponents using techniques like a sweeping slash and a potent overhead strike. Each of these moves seems capable of instantly defeating an enemy. Although the odachi isn’t the quickest sword due to its size and weight, it showcases its adaptability by displaying various combos consisting of three to four strikes in rapid succession.

In the game “Ghost of Yotei”, one of the traditional Japanese weapons players can wield is the odachi. So far, it’s been hinted that the character Atsu will possess multiple sword fighting styles – both single and dual-form katana techniques, as well as the yari, a long spear, and the kusarigama, a short sickle connected to a weighted ball by a chain. For close combat, there are also various types of bows and early firearms at your disposal, which can be loaded with different kinds of ammunition.

Further details are expected to be unveiled as the game’s early October release approaches. It has been announced that Ghost of Yotei will appear at the Tokyo Game Show 2025, alongside Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and Astro Bot. Since the Tokyo Game Show 2025 doesn’t begin until September 25, there is ample time left for Sony and Sucker Punch to reveal more details before then.
