Ghost of Yotei Wolf Petting is Actually a Lot Weirder Than You Realize

Creating the scene where you pet the wolf in Ghost of Yotei was surprisingly unusual. The game’s animation director actually had to get down on all fours so the actress who plays Atsu, Erika Ishii, could realistically pet him. Fans might be surprised to learn just how strange the process was to capture that memorable moment.

Throughout Ghost of Yotei, Atsu’s journey through the Wolf Dens helps her build a connection with a wolf who accompanies her. While these areas are mostly optional to explore, they often contain some of the game’s most touching scenes. Successfully completing all the Wolf Dens leads to a heartwarming moment where Atsu can finally pet her wolf, signifying the peak of their bond.

Ghost of Yotei’s Animation Director Played the Wolf in the Emotional Petting Scene

The emotional scene in the upcoming 2025 game Ghost of Yotei was created in a surprisingly unusual way. According to Erika Ishii, who plays Atsu and is a well-known video game actor, the director of cinematics, Billy Harper, actually got down on all fours so Ishii could playfully pat his head – a technique used to capture the right feeling for the scene. Ishii also mentioned witnessing a similar, spontaneous act of a colleague petting the director while preparing for the shot.

Okay, so this is a funny story from when I was playing Atsu. I was on my lunch break and walked in on Harper – you know, the guy who does motion capture – actually petting Nate Fox, the creative director of Ghost of Yotei! They didn’t even notice I was there. They were deep in discussion about how the petting scene would work – like, where Atsu should stand and exactly how the petting should look. I totally filmed the whole thing on my phone, including Harper petting Nate, without saying a word! Honestly, it’s one of the most memorable things that happened while I was working on the game.

I was chatting with Ishii right before the BAFTAs in April 2026 – it’s a huge gaming event, you know? They were up for a leading role award for playing Atsu, but Jennifer English took home the prize for her work in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Still, Ghost of Yotei did really well, winning awards for both its music and technical stuff. This was Ishii’s fourth nomination for playing Atsu! They’d been nominated for best lead performance at the Golden Joysticks, best performance at The Game Awards, and even won an award at the D.I.C.E. Awards for their character work. It’s awesome to see such recognition for a great performance.

On April 2nd, it had been six months since the popular game Ghost of Yotei was released to positive reviews. Unlike the first game, Ghost of Tsushima, which later came to PC, there are currently no plans to bring Ghost of Yotei to PC. According to a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier in early 2026, Sony might be reducing its efforts to port games to PC. This is due to lower-than-expected profits from PC versions and a desire to avoid making its games playable on the next Xbox console, which is anticipated to support PC games.
