Gnomeregan Needs a Revamp After Undermine’s Success in WoW

With the arrival of the Undermine(d) update in World of Warcraft, goblin characters are at long last able to gain entry into the legendary city of Undermine. Although this location has been deeply embedded within the game’s history for quite some time, players have not previously had the opportunity to explore it. However, with the introduction of Undermine(d), World of Warcraft enthusiasts are now devoting numerous hours to navigating its complex roadways, confronting its numerous cartels, and embarking on an exhilarating adventure centered around goblins. Given its apparent success, Blizzard is not content to rest on their laurels.

Over the course of time, numerous races have been introduced into World of Warcraft that either don’t possess their own capital city or dwell in one that’s in dire need of renovation. For instance, Blood Elves have long demanded Blizzard to refurbish Silvermoon, Worgen players haven’t fully returned to Gilneas yet, and many Night Elf players yearn for a return to Darnassus. While these cities could certainly be valuable additions to Azeroth, it seems like the ideal moment for gnomes to finally get access to their capital, Gnomeregan. This would not only seem fair following the introduction of Undermine, but it’s also arguably long past due for a facelift.

A Revamped Gnomeregan is Long Overdue

Gnomeregan Has Been Within WoW Forever

From the heart of a devoted World of Warcraft enthusiast, I’ve been part of the tale since its very beginnings, and Gnomeregan, the capital city, has been an integral part of that journey. In its early days, the city was seized by the troggs, lured by gnomish technology. The gnomes valiantly defended it, but when they were cornered, they made a desperate move to flood the city with radiation, hoping it would neutralize their foes. Unfortunately, this action forced them to abandon their city.

The surviving gnomes found shelter in Ironforge, the dwarf capital. Some among us harbored dreams of reclaiming our lost city someday, but High Tinkerer Mekkatorque decided to stand by the Alliance in their ongoing war instead.

Within the game, Gnomeregan functioned as an intermediate-level dungeon where players aimed to recapture the city from intruders contaminated by radiation and their accomplices. Despite their victory, the city persisted solely as a dungeon. Prior to Cataclysm, gamers had the chance to participate in Operation: Gnomeregan, which involved reclaiming the surrounding areas and advancing deeper into the city itself. After Cataclysm’s release, the city continued to serve as a dungeon but underwent renovations, offering fresh narratives and questlines. Moreover, it has since featured a small storyline in Battle for Azeroth, yet players have not been granted permission to fully explore it.

Gnomeregan Naturally Feels Like the Next Step

Ever since its launch, players from both Horde and Alliance have repeatedly attempted to liberate Gnomeregan. One might think they’d have claimed the city as their own by now. However, gnomes continue to find shelter within Ironforge or reside in New Tinkertown outside the city. Despite numerous expansions, they haven’t returned to their capital. But with the arrival of Undermine, it gives the impression that Gnomeregan is the logical next conquest.

It’s only fair that gnomes have the opportunity to explore their capital city, just as goblins will soon do with theirs. Both races are known for their inventiveness within their factions. The constant retelling of the capture story suggests it’s long overdue. Allowing the Horde to be the sole possessors of a mechanized city seems unfair. A city redesign could encourage players to either create gnomes or delve deeper into the old world.

Currently, no information is available about whether Gnomeregan will transform into a player-explorable capital city. Throughout the game’s history, it has functioned as a dungeon, leading us to believe that it may continue in this role for some time. Nevertheless, it deserves a chance to showcase its potential. Its moment has been long awaited, and now that Undermine has been introduced, it seems fitting for Gnomeregan to take the stage next.
