God of War Greek trilogy remake confirmed, Sons of Sparta out now

During Thursday’s State of Play, Sony announced two things to celebrate 20 years of God of War. They confirmed they’re starting work on a remake of the first three God of War games, and they unexpectedly released a brand new 2D action game, God of War: Sons of Sparta, which is available to play on PlayStation 5 right now.

During the presentation, a logo revealed that the trilogy is being remade. While they didn’t show any gameplay or announce a release date, Sony Santa Monica Studio confirmed the project is in its early stages and that more information will be shared later. The studio noted that remaking the Greek saga was a highly requested feature from fans, and they’re grateful for the continued enthusiasm for the original games.

The first God of War game came out in 2005 on PlayStation 2, starting a three-game story arc. A second game was released in 2007, and the series concluded with God of War 3 in 2010 on PlayStation 3. Together, these games tell the complete story of Kratos in ancient Greece.

TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos from the early God of War games set in Greece, appeared in the State of Play presentation. He confirmed he’s working on both of the announced projects, marking his first time returning to the role in over ten years.

Santa Monica Studio announced they’re recreating the first three God of War games, and they shared the news with TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos in those games.

Right after revealing the God of War remake, Sony made the older game, God of War: Sons of Sparta, available on the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 5. Developed by Mega Cat Studios with help from Santa Monica Studio, it’s a classic 2D action platformer and a labor of love for the indie team known for retro-style games.

Sons of Sparta tells a new story about Kratos’ early life, focusing on his difficult training with his brother Deimos in Sparta’s rigorous Agoge program. The story explores themes of duty, honor, and the bond between brothers. It’s written by the same team behind the critically acclaimed God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, and features TC Carson returning as the voice of Kratos, narrating the events.

The game reimagines the series’ combat for a side-scrolling experience. Players control Kratos, who wields a spear and shield and uses powerful relics called the Gifts of Olympus. The game features both familiar enemies brought to life with detailed 2D pixel art, and brand new creatures inspired by lesser-known parts of Greek mythology, all created by Mega Cat Studios.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is now available on PlayStation 5 in two versions. The Standard Edition costs $29.99 (USD), €29.99 (EUR), £24.99 (GBP), or ¥3,480 (JPY). The Digital Deluxe Edition is priced at $39.99 (USD), €39.99 (EUR), £32.99 (GBP), or ¥4,480 (JPY) and comes with extra in-game content.

To celebrate the anniversary, we’re also launching new merchandise, opening a special art gallery, and releasing a limited-edition DualSense controller this October.
